Sixth Grade Science Course Overview • Life Science – Student Guide & Source Book: Investigating Organisms: From Macro to Micro- This module picks up where the fifth grade module “Microworlds” ended. The compound microscope will be the tool of choice as the students study the characteristics of microbial life and the characteristics and functions of cells from plants and animals. Along with the study of individual organisms, the students will investigate the role of these organisms in an ecosystem. Threaded throughout this module is an emphasis on careful observation, comparison of the properties of organisms and classification of organisms based on properties. The idea that we learn about the universe by observing, comparing properties, and classifying things in all areas of science ties our three units together.
Sixth Grade Science Course Overview • Physical Science – Student Guide & Source Book: Properties of Matter. This module picks up where the fifth grade module “Mixtures & Solutions” ended. The focus of the “Properties of Matter” module is the study of the physical and chemical properties that characterize matter. The essential concepts of this module provide a foundation for the Earth Science module.
Sixth Grade Science Course Overview • Earth Science – Student Guide & Source Book: Catastrophic Events. The Catastrophic Events module gives the students a chance to apply what they learned about the properties and behavior of matter to earth processes. Catastrophic events are used as the “hook” to invite the students to dig deeper into the causes of these natural events. The focus of the module is on storms, earthquakes, and volcanoes.
