Mongol Rulers Genghis Khan • Genghis Khan was the first official ruler of the Mongol Empire. • Genghis reign of power began when he united the nomadic tribes of Eastern Asia. • The Mongol empire expanded through violent massacres and invasions of nearby lands. • Genghis Khan gave root to one of the most powerful Empires in history. • Before Genghis ÖgedeiKhan • Ögedei Khan was the second ruler of the Mongol empire. • Ögedei was the third son of Genghis Khan. • Ögedei expanded the Mongol empire into the largest empire in history during his rule. • Ögedei was officially chosen as emperor in 1229 CE.
Religion • The Mongols were very accepting of people who practiced different religions. • The Mongol Population was mostly dominated by Christianity, Buddhism, Tengrism, Shaminism, and Islam. • Building places of worship was difficult during Genghis Khan’s reign due to there nomadic lifestyle. However when Ögedei became ruler he built many places of worship for all religions. • Genghis was a shamanist like his son Ögedei. • Ögedei was so accepting of other religions he married a Nestorian Cristian.
Territories • The Mongols were the largest Empire in History. • The Mongols reached their largest in 1279. • The Mongols conquered Most of Asia, Europe, and China, as well as Japan and other small islands. • The Mongols obtained most of the land by conquering other empires with their large and strong army of soldiers and horsemen. • The Mongols did conquer a few places peacefully with the help of cultural and religious diffusion through the Silk Road.
Culture/Economy • The Mongols had a set of laws called “Yassa” meaning order. • Generals and officials were selected based on merit. • The empire was governed by a non-democratic parliamentary-style central assembly, called Kurultia. The Mongol chiefs met with the Great Khan to discuss domestic and foreign policies. • The Mongol had no specific major culture because they fused with all the empires they took over. • The Mongols were one of the only Empires of their time that wrote a book about their history and world history called “The Secret History Of The Mongols.
