  2. What does GATE mean and how will it effect my 1st Grader? • Gifted and Talented Education • Our curriculum will incorporate Depth and Complexity • Differentiation • Benefits every student

  3. Depth and Complexity

  4. Edison Updates • Crosswalks – Please use crosswalk at 6th and Sultana. • Office hours – 7:00 – 4:15 • Free Breakfast – Served between 7-7:30 • Dress Code • Enrichment Classes (after school and during school ) • Snacks/Treats (healthy treats please) • Communication Folders sent home every Weds. • Study Hall – Students will serve 15 minutes in study hall during their recess for the following: • Tardy (served the same day) • Incomplete or missing homework (served the same day)

New Standards Based Report Card • Linked closely to standards • If standard not completely taught, the student will receive a “3” to show that they are progressing towards understanding. • Students must show completion of ENTIRE standard to receive a “4”. • Students must show understanding of 2nd grade (above grade level) standard in order to receive a “5”.

  6. Discipline • In the classroom it is important that students follow directions to develop discipline and ensure the safety of those present. In Room 1 we will be using Pride Tickets and Behavior Chart to encourage positive behavior.

  7. Consequences and Incentives • Blue: Super day! Went above and beyond! • Green: Caution! One warning given. • Yellow: 5 minute time out and note • Orange: 10 minute time out and note • Red: 20 minute time out and conference • Pride tickets for staying on Blue/Green

  8. Homework Policy • Homework will be sent home daily. Please refer to agenda in their notebook.

Homework Agenda • Mon – speller’s Choice Menu, Math • Tues – Speller’s Choice Menu, Math, Writing • Wed –Speller’s Choice Menu, Math • Thur – Math Brain Bender • Daily – Fluency Practice, High Frequency/Vocabulary Word Practice • Reading Logs – extra, turn in at end of the week • Homework Projects – Calendar of dates will be sent home.

  10. Homework Binder (DOT)Daily Organization Tool • 1 or 1 ½ inch 3-ring binder • Dividers • Hold homework helpers given by the teacher – must stay in binder • Goes back and forth daily • Important assessment/progress info • Brain Benders • Speller’s Choice Menu

  11. Projects • Map of home with a legend, a compass rose, and symbols. Write and illustrate rules for your home. Due on Sept. 7 • 3D Map • Jigsaw Puzzle • Flat Map

Room 1 Updates • I have a website where important announcements and assignments can be found – OMSD website • Scholastic book orders will be sent home periodically. • Conferences- Attendance is essential to discuss your child’s progress. • Classroom Phonics Library Books: Books will be sent home to allow students to have additional books at home for reading logs. Must come back daily.

  13. Supplies/Donations • Room 1 will need: • Kleenex • Dry erase markers • Copy Paper • Glue sticks • Treasure box items (small toys, eraser, etc.) • Copy donations • Post Its
