The Laws of Motion 1) The Law of Inertia: Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it Inertia – resistance to action or change • All objects want to remain motionless • If a great enough force is applied to cause motion, the object will want to continue moving in the same direction at a constant speed Law of inertia and video 2 & sports dem0 video
The Law of Inertia Inertiain Sport: • When an athlete wants to get moving from a resting position, inertia can be their biggest enemy because their body wants to remain at rest • Once on the move, inertia can be beneficial to an athlete because it wants to keep the athlete moving • Where do you think an athlete expends the most energy during a 100m dash? • At the beginning of a race? • The last quarter of the race? • After crossing the finish line?
THINK PAIR SHARE Create a list of sports in which the law of inertia benefits the athlete and a list of sports that are challenged by inertia.
The Laws of Motion 2) The Law of Acceleration: If an external force is exerted on an object, the object will accelerate in the same direction of the force, and its acceleration will be directly proportional to the net force and inversely proportional to its mass. Acceleration = Force Mass
The Laws of Motion 3) The Law of Reaction: For every action there is an equal and opposite Reaction. • If object (A) exerts force on object (B), then object (B) exerts the same force on object (A) in the opposite direction Examples: • Pushing against the wall • Basketball Jump Shot Laws of Motion
Types of Motion 1) Linear Motion – movement in a straight line • All points in the body move the same distance, in the same direction, at the same time • Example - a figure skater skating forward 2) Rotational Motion – movement about an axis • Angular motion can occur about an axis within the body or outside of the body • Example – a figure skater in a spin
Types of Motion - Discussion A) Can you brainstorm other sports with rotational movement? B) Think of arm flexion and extension. How would you classify this type of motion? 3) General Motion – a combination of linear and rotational motion. • The most common type of motion exhibited in sports and human movement! How can walking and running can be classified as having both linear and rotational motion patterns?
