National Research Network (RNP) • Network interconnecting the PoP’s of all states S. F. Novaes
RNP2 • The RNP2 backbone RNP2 started in July 2000 • ATM technology for PoPs with large traffic • Frame Relay for PoPs with smaller traffic • 27 PoPs in the main cities and capitals • Gateway access at 155 Mbps • Two international connections: • 155 Mbps connected to Internet2 via Chicago STARTAP • 45 Mbps connected to Internet2 via Florida’s GigaPoP (Academic Network of Americas Path, AmPath) • Should connect all Federal Research Institutes S. F. Novaes
Academic Network at São Paulo (ANSP) • Started in 1989 with the Bitnet access (after some test in Rio de Janeiro of Alberto Santoro) • First Brazilian network to be connect with Internet in 1991 • It is one of the main international connections • Connects the academic networks of the São Paulo universities and research institutes • 2001: agreement with NSF and UCAID allow connection to STARTAP to all cooperative projects • International traffic has independent link at 155 Mbps. • It is the PoP of RNP at state of São Paulo S. F. Novaes

New Program: TIDIA • New project from FAPESP (Foundation for Science Support of the State of São Paulo) http://www.tidia.fm.usp.br/ • Intend to give financial support for the development of technologies related to the high speed networks • Improve the qualification of human resources • Development of new technologies, products and services • Investment of at least US$ 4 millions • Received 123 proposals for new projects S. Rede Rio • Network connecting the universities and research institutes of Rio de Janeiro. • Two main connections:155Mbps with RNP and 34Mbps with IMPSAT UERJ CBPF S. F. Novaes

Conclusions • Connection is improving in Brazil and all Latin America • High Energy Physics have played a major role in this evolution • However the HEP does not always get the due retribution • e.g. UERJ with the largest HEP group still have a 8 Mbps link while RedeRio is operating at 155 Mbps.
