  2. Category • Category: demigods • The nine muses are demigods because one parent is a god while the other is not • The nine muses were the daughters of Zeus the king of the Gods, and Mnemosyne the titaness of memory • Were created to help the gods of mount Olympus celebrate victories

  3. The Nine Muses • Calliope – epic poetry • Clio – history • Thalia – comedy • Urania – astronomy • Polyhymnia – sacred songs and hymns • Erato– love poetry • Euterpe – lyric poetry • Melpomene – tragedy • Terpsichore - dance

  4. Background • The muses were nine very intelligent, beautiful, and careless divinities • Lived on mount Olympus with their leader and teacher, the god Apollo • Like him, the muses remained young and beautiful forever

  5. What the muses are known for • They could see into the future which few other gods could do • Had the power to banish all grief and sorrow • writers, poets, musicians, and artists would call upon the muses for help and inspiration

  6. Conclusion • In conclusion, the myth of the muses described nine intelligent, beautiful divinities that had exceptional talents and who played numerous roles in many popular Greek myths
