  1. Linux Boot Floppies/CDs

  2. Topics • Bootable Removable Media • Distro’s • Root password recovery

  3. Bootable/Removable Media Uses • Recovery and Repair • Forensics • Floppy based firewall • …or just Linux on a disk

  4. Some Distro’s… • Many, many choices • muLinux (http://mulinux.sunsite.dk/) • Old but still useful for recovery & repair • Freesco (http://www.freesco.info/) • replacement for small Cisco routers • hal91 (http://jspiro.tripod.com/linux/hal91.htm) • Rescue and recovery • Pocket Linux (http://www.pocket-lnx.org/) • designed to quickly convert a PC workstation into a secure, Linux-based workstation.

  5. Some more… • tomsrtbt (http://www.toms.net/rb/) • “The most GNU/Linux on one floppy disk” • Trinux (http://trinux.sourceforge.net/) • Network Security • Floppyfw (http://www.zelow.no/floppyfw/) • router with the advanced firewall-capabilities • Nuclinux (http://people.jyu.fi/~tuma/home/nuclinux.php) • connect to the Internet from a networked pc

  6. Root Password Recovery • Step One: Boot from removable media such as a floppy with tomsrtbt installed • Step Two: Mount the partition • This would be the partition with /etc • With the following command: mount –t ext2 /dev/hda5 /mnt (Note: you must be sure of the fstype)

  7. Root Password Recovery • Step Three: Edit the password-file • First determine the file you want to edit with your favorite editor -- vi • Normally this would be /etc/shadow • Look for the line that starts with root (normally the 1st line) root:fX2SDLhg4OvDU:11803:0:99999:7::: • The fields are separated by “ : “ and the password is the 2nd field

  8. Root Password Recovery • Delete the password so the line now looks like this: root::11803:0:99999:7::: • Then save the file and exit the editor • Step Four: Unmount the partition • Step Five: Reboot without the floppy and login as root without a password • Step Six: Set the root password

  9. Class Exercise • First Make a backup copy of passwd and shadow before booting with the floppy su – cp /etc/passwd /root cp /etc/shadow /root

  10. More Distro’s… • LWN.net (http://lwn.net/) • Large list of Distro’s • Linux.Org (http://www.linux.org) • Large searchable list of Distro’s

  11. Unique and Interesting Distro’s • Flight Linux (http://flightlinux.gsfc.nasa.gov/) • FlightLinux is a concept that uses a real-time variation of the open source Linux Operating System for onboard spacecraft use.

  12. Pizza Box Distro • KYZO (http://www.kyzo.com/) • aka Pizza Box Distro, now a commercial company that specializes in custom distro’s

  13. Billy Bass Linux • This project uses the power of Linux to add brains to the Big Mouth Billy Bass. The goal is to use any Linux device--desktop or embedded--to make the Big Mouth Billy Bass say or act any way you want! That's right, we want to convert Big Mouth Billy to the least expensive peripheral you'll ever buy. http://bigmouth.here-n-there.com/
