An IT Appliance Deployed in Remote Site and Data Center Clients Feel Like Servers in Data Centers are Local Overcomes Constraints of the WAN Transparent to Clients and Servers Best-in-class Compression Replaces Need for Caching We build an appliance, though Riverbed is a software company (customers want appliances, for the most part) You need one appliance on either side of a WAN link They can be deployed in an N+1 (hub and spoke, 1 big one in the datacenter and many on the edge) or fully meshed The appliances vary by disk size, WAN bandwidth supported, and therefore no. of users Steelhead appliances can be clustered behind a L4 Switch for scale What does it do? It overcomes the issues of limited bandwidth and high latency that we just discussed so that Clients feel like their remote servers are on the LAN (“LAN-like”) It’s completely transparent to clients & servers It’s not compression and it’s not caching NOTE: You may get some resistance to this. Ways to handle it include: Please bear with me and by the end, I’ll ask you what you think our technology is (If the customer is insistent that we are caching or compression, then give in on this point) Why we replace caching: Like a cache, we store data locally, which improves the performance for data sent across the WAN Unlike a cache, we handle all TCP traffic, not just one type (like files, web or mail for example) Unlike a cache, which is a proxy server, Steelhead appliances are not proxy servers We send every client request to the origin server in real time We never “serve” anything from the edge; our box just decodes requests and reassembles requests that were served by the origin server BEST IN CLASS DATA REDUCTION Steelhead appliances far outperform (by a factor of 5-10x) the next best compression appliances on the market. While other WAN compression appliances offer up to 10:1 compression (Peribit claims up to 7.2x compression in their latest white paper (see http://www.nwfusion.com/reviews/2004/071904peribitrev.html ). Riverbed can achieve compression ratios as high as 400:1 in single transactions. Our technology is sometimes described as being more like data “reduction” rather than “compression” Our objective is to never send data across the WAN that has ever been across before We don’t compress existing TCP payloads; rather, we examine payloads and determine whether we even have to send data at all We address the impact of application level protocol latency (compression appliances do not) Even new disk-based products announced by some customers do not have application-level protocol optimizations (which we refer to as “Application Streamlining”), so they will have little to no impact on Windows or Exchange performance over the WAN Adding a disk to a compression appliance does not solve all the problems. There are two dimensions to consider How far back in time can you look for repeated patterns (how much data do you store) When repeated data is found, how much of it can be represented by a “code” (or a “reference” in our case) We believe that our algorithms outperform our compression competitors on pure WAN optimization. They can introduce a product with an equivalent amount of disk, but that alone will not deliver the performance. So, what is it? 8. Maximizing remote application performance

    9. © 2006 RIVERBED TECHNOLOGY, INC – CONFIDENTIAL 9 Distributed computing problems are converging Most companies use bandwidth as the scapegoat for all of the problems that remote offices have with application performance over the WAN. Poor performance, however, is the result of three equally important problems. Solving just one of them will not truly solve the problem. Networking bandwidth AND latency slow data access Storage problems result in excess capacity utilization for backup, high management costs, and limited access to data in other offices Applications that are not optimized for use over the WAN operate slowly even in high capacity environmentsMost companies use bandwidth as the scapegoat for all of the problems that remote offices have with application performance over the WAN. Riverbed Steelhead appliances: Accomplish WAFS, and much more Accomplish network compression and TCP optimization, and more Accomplish application acceleration, and more! An additional technology, discussed later, enables Steelhead appliances to operate even with a WAN failure. Even with this functionality turned off, Riverbed accomplishes the goals of ALL THREE of these older types of technology. The first time a file is sent through the network, all the data and reference links to the data are sent to the remote steelhead. (A “cold send”) The cold send is still optimized with the TCP and application optimizations discussed on the next slide. Next time data is requested the central steelhead needs to simply send references to data on the remote steelhead. If parts of the data has changed, the steelhead simply sends the chunks of data that have changed, with new references. The file is then reconstructed using a combination of the changed and unchanged data. 20. © 2006 RIVERBED TECHNOLOGY, INC – CONFIDENTIAL 20 Riverbed’s approach accelerates all TCP applications Most applications can take advantage of the underlying Riverbed technologies to achieve some immediate acceleration. Some applications are optimized dramatically (FTP) with no additional Application Streamlining plug-ins. Other key applications are so important that Riverbed has implemented application-specific optimizations to achieve the performance enhancements that customers are looking for. Riverbed continues to add plug-ins for additional applications. Templates allow customers to implement modifications for in-house web-based applications.
