Where did we start? PTSA After school tutoring program – Lori Hartin • Who? 45 – 50 Students that have been recommended by counselor and teachers and have been approved by the Student Study Team. • What? Working on homework, organization, and long term assignments with a Moorpark College tutor. • When? On a daily basis after school from 3:00 – 4:30. • Follow-up? Nightly calls home by tutoring coordinator and tutoring coordinator working with counselors. • Incentives? Better grades.
Where are we now? • ELL Lunch Tutoring • Who? 20 ELL students that have been identified by the ELL coordinator & ELL counselor. • What? Working on homework, organization, and long term assignments with a teacher. Students complete a progress report check at the end of each week. • When? On a daily basis at Lunch in the Library classroom. • Follow-up? ELL coordinator & ELL counselor track progress and are in contact with parents. • Incentives? Food on Fridays (sometimes), front of the line lunch passes, better grades.
Where are we now? (cont.) • Lunch Mentoring Program • Who? 36 at-risk 9th grade students (Mentees) are paired with 36 trained Academic Mentors. • What? Working on homework, organization, study skills, and long term assignments. • When? Monday – Thursday in a classroom at Lunch. 18 Students are on a Mon/Wed schedule and 18 students are on a Tue/Thur schedule. • Follow-up? Any absent student is called in immediately after lunch. Administrator & counselor track progress and are in contact with parents. • Incentives? Food vouchers for school cafeteria, gift cards to community vendors, better grades.
What has the Lunch Mentoring Program Shown Us? • 38 Students in the Program • Comparing 1st Semester and 3rd Quarter Grades, 18 Students Increased GPA • Great GPA Jumps • 1.17 to 2.00 • 0.67 to 2.00 • 1.40 to 2.83 • 1.60 to 2.67 • 1.83 to 3.60 • 1.20 to 2.17 Average Increase 0.70
Where are we going? • Expanded Lunch Mentoring Program • Who? 72 at-risk 9th & 10th grade students (Mentees) are paired with 72 trained Academic Mentors • What? Working on homework, organization, study skills, and long term assignments. • When? Monday – Thursday in two classrooms at Lunch. 36 Students are on a Mon/Wed schedule and 36 students are on a Tue/Thur schedule. • Follow-up? Any absent student is called in immediately after lunch. Where are we going? (cont.) • Organized Academic Success in School (OASIS) • Who? 36 at-risk 9th & 10th grade students paired with 36 trained Academic Mentors. • What? Working on homework, organization, study skills, and long term assignments. • When? Everyday as a class period on the students schedule for credit. • Follow-up? All regular attendance policies apply. Teacher tracks progress and is in regular contact with parents. • Incentives? Academic Mentors receive 5 elective credits for the class and are guaranteed a reduced fee parking permit. Mentees receive 5 elective credits, food vouchers for school cafeteria, and a chance for better grades
Where are we going? (cont.) • Academic Advisement • Who? 1st Quarter – All 9th Grade Students Rest of Year – Any Student with multiple D/F grades • What? Working on homework, organization, study skills, and long term assignments with a trained Academic Mentor. • When? Every Tuesday & Thursday in an advisement period (between 5th period & lunch) for 20 minutes. • Follow-up? All regular attendance policies apply. Counselors track progress and is in regular contact with parents. Teacher will give the student a citizenship grade. • Incentives? No lunch pass, can not be out of the program until an official grading period, all other students get a 1 hour lunch on Tuesdays & Thursdays.
