Some French Specificities • A Baccalauréat suffices to enter University • A Bac S or ES suffices to take a Math major • Selective HE institutions exist outside Uni • Probably not more then 25% get a Bachelor in 3 y • Many students want to take a Math major • Not many teachers accept to adapt their teaching to the knowledge and interests of students

1992 MASS in Nice was created in 1992 as a demand of economists Martyrology Economy: lab= CEMaFI Claude Berthomieux, Jean-Paul Guichard,… Maths: lab= Labo Dieudonné [Georges Haddad], Francine Diener, Daniela Zône-Soubiran, Marc D., Jean-François Burnol… Sciences Dean: Michel Rouillard

Important features for the success • Economists interested in Math (joint seminars) • Mathematicians interested in Economy • Common enthusiasm to create something new accessible to open-minded students • Weekly seminar when somebody wanted to experiment an innovative course • At least one person (FD) had a complete scientific view off all years and all matter
Mottos for the Math teaching • Students not allowed to be shy about mathematical subjects • Teachers not allowed to assume that the content is important just because it is in the programme… • … or interesting just because it is mathematically correct. • Rigor is a tool, not a purpose (or a Grail)
Some pleasant innovations • Calculus taught with infinitesimals • Probability taught by non-probabilists (no probabilists were/are available in Nice) • Finance with discrete models (with infinitesimals in mind: van den Berg created the teaching and published later a book ) • All this contributed to have enthusiastic teachers
A convincing rumor among students • « If you take MASS (and not Math) you’ll get 1 point more (on 20) »
Output • 25% prefer to get immediately a job (banks, insurance, trade, …) • 50% enter in a fourth year in Nice (possibly leaving later for some selective HE school, such as ENSAE, Dauphine,…) • 25% leave immediately Nice to enter a Master programme elsewhere • Last 50-25 tend to become 25-50

BIM: Main features • Three tracks in the three Bachelor programmes: • Biology (with Math and CS) • Computer Science (with Math and Biology) • Maths (with Biology and CS) • A clearly identified group of students in different Bachelor tracks, sharing common lectures and student-projects • Again, the demand did not come from the mathematicians, but here from biologists (and CS support)
Mottos for BIM teaching • Each student will become a true Bachelor in Biology, or in Math, or in Computer Science, according to the chosen major. • Thanks to the « projects » he will learn to speak with mates of the two other domains and understand and possibly share their centre of interests.

Master M2IM (IMAMIS)Main features • Math and CS, with one major • Student’s professional project oriented • Choice of modules among most Math and CS teaching offer of Nice • One semester (2nd or 3ed) outside France, in a IMAMIS partner university • Last semester: internship in one partner company or laboratory
The IMAMIS Netwok • Open to new partnerships • Setup of an IMAMIS network • Present in Manila (U. of Philippines) • This will attract students who wish to have an organized international experience
