Nonlinear dynamics of toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes in presence of a tearing mode

This paper presents a study on the nonlinear dynamics of toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) in the presence of a tearing mode (TM). Results from simulations show the evolution and interaction of these modes, highlighting the freezing of TAE frequency chirping due to TM activity.

  2. Outline • 1. Background • 2. A brief introduction of CLT-K code and its benchmark • 3. Simulation results • a. n=2 EPM • b. n=1 TAE & Tearing mode • Summary

  3. 1. Background HL-2A J-TEXT High frequency branch(TAE/BAE) and low frequency(TM) are always observed on HL-2A and J-TEXT experiments. W. Chen at. el. EPL, 107 (2014) 25001

  4. 1. Background HL-2A Weakly chirping of TAEs Pitch-Fork of TAEs Strong TM actives lead to nonlinear mode-mode couplings and TAEs are weakly chirping. Pitch-Fork TAEs is observed associated with weaker tearing modes. P. W. Shi at. el. Physics of Plasmas 24, 042509 (2017);

  5. 2. A brief introduction of CLT-K code and its benchmark The MHD component of CLT-K is based on CLT (Ci-Liu-Ti means MHD in Chinese) which is an initial value code that resolves the full set of resistive MHD equations in 3D toroidal geometries. 8. Hot particle current Jh :Guiding center current :Magnetization current :Polarization current

  9. Benchmark for CLT-K Parameters for n=1 TAE benchmark study • Equruimbirum parameters • Hot particle parameters • Slowing down distribution • For simplify

  10. Benchmark study on linear n=1TAE CLT-K NOVA TAE : ωNOVA=0.100ωantenna=0.097 ωEP=0.093 γ/ωβNOVA=1 γ/ωβEP=1.25

  11. Benchmark study on nonlinear n=1TAE Theoretical scaling law:Eφsat ~ γL2!

  12. Parameters for n=2 TAE simulation 3. Simulation results a. n=2 EPM • n=2 • q0 = 1.25 • Beta_av = 0.016

  13. Time evolution of frequency n=2 modes driven by isotropic fast ions

  14. Time evolution of mode structure for n=2 modes

  15. Peak value of two poloidal harmonics (m=2 and 3) as a function of time 1.m=2 and m=3 are almost same during the linear stage, which is TAE-like structure 2.m=2 is over taken than m=3 for short time 3.m=3 is dominant at late time

  16. Mode power struture EPM (initially TAE-like or rTAE) is linearly unstable and one component of EPM remains the frequency unchanged while another component of EPM chirps down to a BAE gap during the nonlinear phase, which can be called BAE-like EPM.

  17. Comparisons of δf for Λ=0.50 resonant line along a constant phase : Linear stage Nonlinear stage The same movement is also observed for Λ=0.00,0.25 cases, but it is more evident for Λ=0.50 cases

  18. b. n=1 TAE and tearing modes • Key parameters: • R0=4m, a=1m, βthermal=0, η=10-5 • Parameters for fast ions are same as previous cases • Assumption: • The effect of fast ions on the equilibrium are neglected. • We only keep n=1 component of Jh !

  19. Time evolution of the mode(βh=0.008) Saturation due to nonlinear MHD mode coupling Saturation due to wave-particle interaction Multiple tearing mode saturation TAE  Tearing modes

  20. Time evolution of different components of mode

  21. Snapshots of the mode structure

  22. Evolution of power spectrum for different mode n=1 TAE is dominant at the linear stage, then other TAEs (n=0,2,3) are excited during the nonlinear stage. Primary mode High frequency branch : TAE Low frequency branch : tearing mode Secondary mode

  23. Radial structure of mode power spectrum TM: low frequency around the q=2 rational surface(r=0.5) TAE: high frequency peaked near r=0.4 and splits into two branches total m=1 m=2 m/n=2/1 poloidal harmonic first split into two branches

  24. Comparisons for different resistivity  Linear: Small resistivity: damping(TAE) Large resistivity: destabilize(tearing mode) Nonlinear: η↑ frequency chirping ↓ weak TM strong TM

  25. Comparisons of radial frequency structure for different resistivity Weak TM Strong TM Tearing mode leads to freezing the frequency chirping of TAE!

  26. Comparisons of phase space structure for different resistivity for passing particle η=1e-7 η=1e-5

  27. Comparisons of phase space structure for different resistivity for trapped particle

  28. 4. Brief Summary • The m/n=2/1 and m/n=1/1 poloidal harmonics of high frequency branch(TAE) will be separated in the late stage while they share the same TAE frequency during the linear regime. • Strong tearing mode activity can freeze frequency chirping of n=2 TAE.
