What we will learn today: • About Saint Yared • What the worm taught him • What the 3 birds taught him
Who is Saint Yared? • Saint Yared is one of the Saints of our Church • He was born in 505 AD • He gave us a lot of hymns (zema) and writings that our Church uses • His feast day is Ginbot 11 (In May, usually around 19th)
Saint Yared and the worm • When Saint Yared started learning to read and write, he was not learning as fast as the other kids, so he felt bad and decided to give up. • When he gave up and was going to another city, he rested under a tree, and he saw a worm trying to climb a tree. The worm kept falling down, but it kept trying again and again. • After falling 6 times, it succeeded on the 7th try!
Saint Yared and the worm • This encouraged Saint Yared to keep trying and he went back to his teacher, apologized for running away and continued to learn. • And because he didn’t give up, God helped him and he was able to learn fast! God helps people who try their best!
Saint Yared and the three birds • One day when Saint Yared was praying, three birds came to him and sung to him with angelic voices. • They taught him different kinds of hymns (zema) to be used to worship God. • St. Yared also heard and learned to sing from angels
Saint Yared and the three birds • He started composing songs of praise for God. He also composed songs to the Virgin Mary. • Many people (including the king) listened to him when he sang because his voice was so beautiful. “Who is this man? Wow! He sings such a nice and melodious song”, people said in wonder. Even cows and oxen held their ears straight to listen while he sang. • He taught priests and many believers how to sing songs of worship and praise for God.
Conclusion • Saint Yared learned never to give up from a little worm, and went back to his teacher to learn. Not only was he able to learn to read and write, but also became a great saint. Sometimes it may take repeated effort, but there is nothing we can’t achieve in faith if we keep trying. • The songs of Saint Yared are songs he learned from angels. That is why we use them today in our church. We should strive to learn this angelic praise. The songs you learn and sing every day at church are derived from the songs of St. Yared.
