Introduction This course involves practice in developing students’ confidence and ability to deliver public speeches for a variety of purposes and occasions. The course also emphasises speech preparation, speech writing, oral language, visual aids preparation, and speech presentation.
Learning Objectives By the end of the course, students are able to: • prepare speeches for various purposes • apply appropriate language for oral presentations • develop effective audio-visual aids for presentations • demonstrate confidence and competence in delivering speeches
Required Texts: • Title: The Art Of Public Speaking (10th ed) or (11th ed) Author: Stephen E.Lucas Publisher: McGraw Hill. 2. Module: BBI2417 Public Speaking Publisher: UPM (Available at UPMET office)
Marks Allocations: • COURSE WORK (70%) - Please refer to the course work description 2. FINAL EXAM (30%)
Description of Course Work (70%) Assignment 1 (10%) – Submit by Week 5 • Choose TWO special occasions • Prepare and deliver a speech for each occasion • Speech duration: 3 minutes for each speech • E.g. To welcome a new staff to your department, birthday party, wedding toast, etc • Record the presentation and hand-in the CD to the UPMET office
Assignment 2 (20 %) – Submit by Week 10 • Prepare and deliver a speech to inform (Informative Speech) • Speech duration: 5 – 7 minutes • Audience: Classmates/imaginary audience • Venue: Classroom/hall • E.g. The Guitar, My country Malaysia, The most unique island in the world, etc. • Record the presentation and hand-in the CD to the UPMET office
Assignment 3 (25%) – Submit by Week 13 • Prepare and deliver a speech to persuade (Persuasive Speech) • Speech duration: 7-9 minutes • Audience: Classmates/imaginary audience • Venue: Classroom/hall • E.g. Let’s Go Green, Let’s Reduce our Sugar Intake, Let’s Live Healthily, etc • Record the presentation and hand-in the CD to the UPMET office
Marks for speeches are based on: • Content • Language • Delivery
Student-Directed Learning Portfolio (15%) – Submit by Week 13 • Download the SDL Portfolio handout from the website • Complete the exercises in the SDL Portfolio • Hand-in the portfolio to the UPMET office
Description of Final Exam (30%) • Consists of Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQ), True-False Questions and Outlining paragraph.
