Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System What is it? • A system put in place to respond to the Canadian workers' right to know more about safety and health hazards of the materials they use in their workplace. • Canada-wide legislation with specific Provincial input. • Provides specific information about hazardous materials (controlled products). *See Video : What is WHMIS Video: Lost Youth Quiz: What is WHMIS

  3. Three parts to WHMIS: • Labels: • Education / Training: • MSDS:

  4. Labels: Alert worker to the identity and dangers of the product and to basic safety precautions. Labels may contain symbols form the 6 Classes of Hazardous Materials *See Handout : WHMIS Labels

MSDS are technical documents that provide more detailed hazard, precautionary, and emergency information about a substance. • An MSDS must be present for each hazardous material regulated under WHMIS Canadian MSDS consist of nine pieces of information: Hazardous Ingredients Preparation Information Production Information Physical Data Fire or Explosion Hazard Reactivity Data Toxicological Properties Preventive Measures First Aid Measures *See Handout : MSDS Sections Video: Making WHMIS work

Assignment: MSDS Sheets • Identify Six chemicals used in the shop. • In groups of 2, compile a list of these substances • Use the web to find the MSDS sheets for any Five • On a sheet of paper hand write: • Product name • First aid measures • Preventive Measures • Sketch The container DO NOT PRINT
