Definition of therapeutic communication • Is the process of exchanging information to therapeutic targets or other targets between health service providers and recipients • This includes doctor, nurse, patient and family
Continue… • an interactive process between nurse and client that helps the client overcome temporary stress, to get along with other people, to adjust to the unalterable, and to overcome psychological blocks which stand in the way of self-realization • Therapeutic communication is important to mental health professionals
Therapeutic communication is important, why ?? • Allowing an individual to feel safe to share his innermost feelings. • Communication (usually verbal) with a client that is helpful and beneficial; creating a healing and curative. • This facilitates the formation of a positive nurse-patient relationship . Is important for ourselves to promote personal appearances and our self-esteem. To gain the confidence of pt and team members.
Therapeutic communication techniques • Using silence Example: The client says: "We drink and smoke a lot here." The student thinks…how can that be…drinking alcohol in a state hospital? But says nothing…using silence…the client then says: "yes we drink a lot of cokes and smoke a lot."
Therapeutic communication techniques • Accepting Examples:"Yes" or "I follow what you said" • Giving Recognition e.g. "I notice you combed your hair." • Offering self e.g. "I'll sit with you awhile."
Therapeutic communication techniques • Using Broad Openings e.g. "What would you like to talk about?" "Tell me what's bothering you." • Using General Leads (using neutral expressions to encourage continued talking by the client) e.g. "Go on. " Ummm..I am listening“ "Tell me about it"
Therapeutic communication techniques • Making Observations e.g. "You appear tense • Placing he event in time or sequence "Was this before or after…?" • Focusing e.g. "This point seems worth looking at more closely.” "You said something earlier that I want you to go back to."

Types of motivation • Motivating the patient by two ways: Verbally by helping the patient to cross over his phsicologyical problems. Physically by assisting the patient in the therapeutic care and treatment
