  2. Review • What role did miracles play in Buddhism winning acceptance in Korea during the Three Kingdoms period? • What sorts of Buddhist things do Buddhists do? • What is the relationship between Buddhism and geomancy? • What sort of rituals did we discuss in relationship to Buddhism?

  3. the monk Kyŏnghŏ • What is a “hwadu”? How can meditating on a hwadu lead to enlightenment? • What does Kyŏnghŏ’s life after his enlightenment tell you about the importance of proper behavior in Buddhism? (See p. 140-41) • Why do you think Kyŏnghŏ is so highly regarded by Korean Buddhists today?

  4. Prenatal Buddhist education • Who is Daehaeng Sunim? • What Buddhist elements do you see in what she says about the benefits of fetal education? • Why does she call her Buddhist temples “One Mind Meditation Centres”?

  5. Distinctive Features of Korean Buddhism • What impact has Buddhism had on Korean culture? • How is Korean Buddhism different from Buddhism in other countries? • Who are the most important Buddhist thinkers in Korean history? • Wŏnhyo (617-686) and Chinul (1158-1210). Chinul is famous for teaching that sudden enlightenment must be followed by gradual cultivation of a moral character. • Which are the most important deities in popular Korean Buddhism?

  6. “Oriental Medicine in Korea” • Don Baker, “Oriental Medicine in Korea” • in Helaine Selin, ed. “Medicine Across Cultures” pp. 133-153. • found in Selin, Helaine • Encyclopaedia of the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine in Non-Western Cultures • ISBN: • 9401714185, 9789401714181 • Date: • 1997 • Publisher: • Springer Science+Business Media B.V. • On campus or in UBC VPN mode, you can click: • http://link.springer.com.ezproxy.library.ubc.ca/book/10.1007/0-306-48094-8

  7. “Oriental Medicine” • Korea’s traditional medicine is essentially a variant of Chinese medicine. • It identifies five major organs (liver, heart, spleen, lungs, and kidneys) and the six supportive organs (gallbladder, stomach, large intestine, small intestine, bladder, and triple burner). However, these organs are not conceived of as physical objects as much as they are seen as centres for certain functions. • It tries to maintain or, if necessary, restore the harmonious interaction of those organs. • It identifies three fundamental forms of ki in the body: Chŏng, ki, and shin ( visible, invisible but palpable, and ethereal forms of ki) • Assumes systematic correspondence (Something associated with water, for example, can influence the functioning of the kidney.)

  8. The Five Phases • Yin and Yang, plus Wood, Fire, Water, Metal, and Earth--stages of action rather than elements per se. • cycle of production: wood⇒ fire⇒ earth⇒ metal⇒ water ⇒ wood • cycle of overcoming: water ⇒ fire ⇒metal ⇒ wood⇒ earth ⇒ water • correlations: wood with the liver and gall bladder; fire with the heart and small intestine, earth with the spleen and stomach, metal with the lungs and large intestine, and water with the kidneys and bladder.

  9. types of treatment • acupuncture, based on belief that ki flows through certain invisible meridians (channels) in the body, and that sometimes that flow is blocked. Stimulation with needles is believed to clear up such blockages. • moxibustion, based on the same principles as acupuncture, except that heat (burning mugwort) is used to stimulate the ki. • prescriptions--using animal, mineral, and vegetable material. Is usually a complex prescription to prevent inappropriate side-effects. • preventive measures--breathing techniques, physical exercises, diet, a moderate lifestyle, etc.

  10. Causes of bodily disharmony • illness is defined as a failure for the various elements of the body to cooperate harmoniously. • Can be caused by internal or external factors (too much or not enough heat, cold, dampness, dryness, wind, and summer heat) • Also, the seven emotions (joy, anger, sadness, grief, pensiveness, fear, and fright) can influence a person’s health. • An unhealthy way of life can also cause problems. It is important to have a healthy diet and sex life and to engage in regular moderate physical activity • Burns, parasites, wounds, and trauma are also recognized.

  11. Diagnostic Techniques • Feeling the pulse for depth, pressure, speed, width, and strength. • looking at the tongue, the patient’s general physical appearance, facial colour, and bodily secretions and excretions. • listening to voice and respiration • smelling the odour the patient’s body gives off.

  12. Famous Korean doctors • Hŏ Chun 17th-century author of the Tongŭ Pogam, an encyclopedia of Oriental Medicine. • Yi Chema 19th century thinker who created “Four Constitutions” medical theory (Big yang, small yang, big yin, and little yin) • In the 1970s, a Korean physician came up with the idea of “hand acupuncture,” the notion that all acupuncture points have corresponding points in the hand.

  13. Korean elements • What makes Korean Oriental medicine Korean? • 1) Daoist preventive techniques • 2) More interested in fortifying than in purging • 3) use of local ingredients
