They are known for their beauty and this is a huge tourist area for Canada. • West of the Canadian Rockies is the Coast Mountains which skirt Canada’s Pacific shore and form another CORDILLERA. • There is a string of islands that lie off Canada’s west coast these are actually mountain peaks that are underwater. • The tallest mountain Peak in Canada is: Mount Logan which reaches a height of 19,551 feet near the border of Alaska.

Economic Regions • Eastern Canada • Fishing is a major industry in Canada especially in places such as Newfoundland, Labrador, and the Maritime Provinces. • One of the best places to fish is the Grand Banks off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. • Halifax is a major shipping center in the same region.

It was founded in 1608 by the French. • Canada’s second largest PROVINCE is Ontario. It is the most populated and the richest of all the provinces.

Economic Regions • Prairie Provinces & British Columbia • The Prairie Provinces include Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. • In this region farming and ranching are a major industry. • A major crop of Canada is wheat • Some of the world’s largest reserves of oil and natural gas are found in Alberta. • Forests cover much of British Columbia.
