LauraCrow-Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs • What she does as a dean: • Student conduct • Deals with Emergencies • Supervision of four departments, Residence life, Security, Career services and Programming and Commuter services • Interaction with parents • Assist the V. P. of students affairs • What I learned from Laura Crow: • Be energetic • Never let personal feelings get in the way of your work • Know what you want • Be sure you fit at the institution.
Sharyn Slavin-Miller-pastassociate dean of students at the University of Southern California, past assistant vice president of student affairs at California Institute of Technology • What I learned from SharynSlavin-Miller: • Know the institution very well, that you might be working for • Get a Doctorate if you want to be a dean • Don’t be afraid to try new things • What she did as a dean: • Deal with Emergencies as they come up • Supervision of the women center, career center, student activities, The Daily Trojan- newspaper, campus life and recreation • Meetings!
Oh, to be a Dean • #1 Get a doctorate… • #2 Know that student interaction might decrease • #3 Know the campus community that you will be deaning for. Dean Larrabee? Hummm . . . I could get used to that
