Click IRB Module 2 – Click IRB and CITI Training
Objectives • In this module you will learn: • What is the required training? • How CITI training is integrated in Click IRB
Training Requirements • The University of Georgia IRB requires the completion of training on human subject research protections by the principal investigator and all personnel who will be engaged in the conduct of human research. The principal investigator will only be able to submit a new application, continuing review, or request to modify (amend) approved studies if all research team members have satisfied the training requirement. • For UGA investigators, this training requirement will be satisfied by the completion of the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative Course, or CITI, a web-based training program on the protection of human research subjects. There are basic courses for social/behavioral and biomedical research. Choose the track that is most appropriate for the type of research that will be conducted. Each course module has an associated quiz. An aggregate score of 80% is required to receive a course completion report. UGA investigators are required to complete a refresher course every five (5) years.
Instructions for Completing CITI Training • To complete the IRB training, you must access the UGA CITI Login Portal or key in the following URL into your browser: https://paul.ovpr.uga.edu/CITI. • At the Select Group page, Step 1 gives you basic instructions; Step 2 asks you to Select the group(s) appropriate to your research activities from the following. • Group 1 Social & Behavioral Research • Group 2 Social & Behavioral Research – Children • Group 3 Social & Behavioral Research – International • Group 4 Social & Behavioral Research – Children & International • Group 5 Social & Behavioral Research – Internet • Group 6 Social & Behavioral Research – Prisoners • Group 7 Bio-Medical Research • Group 8 IRB Members • Note: Since several courses are available, be sure to select the groups under Human Subjects/IRB which is Item #1, and notResponsible Conduct of Research/RCR which is Item #2. • On the Learners Menu, choose Basic Course. The required and optional modules are listed in the Grade Book. • Complete all the required modules and associated quizzes. A passing score of 80% or better is needed for successful completion of the course. • Important: If you do not complete all the required modules in one session, you can re-enter the course site as needed to complete the training. • If you receive a notice that your training is going to expire, access the UGA CITI login portal and complete the applicable Refresher course.
UGA CITI Login Portal • UGA investigators should only use the UGA CITI Login Portal to access the training website/your records using their UGA MyID. • You MUST use the UGA CITI Login Portal (https://paul.ovpr.uga.edu/CITI/) at least one time before you can participate in any UGA compliance task or the next time you wish to take a CITI course. This will ensure that your CITI training records are linked to your UGA ID and viewable in Click IRB.
How does CITI training meet Click IRB? • Click IRB validation will only allow submission of a request (e.g. new study, continuing review, or amendment (modification)) if all of the UGA investigators for the study have: • Completed either the Social and Behavioral or Bio-Medical Basic or Refresher CITI courses, AND • The training will not expire in less than or equal to 30 days from the day of submission. • Non-UGA investigators’ training records should be uploaded and attached to the submission for review. Human Subjects Office personnel will review these training records submitted for all non-UGA investigators on a study and, if the following criteria are not met, a request for the additional information/missing items will be sent to the PI and the study will only enter the Pre-Review status when these criteria have been satisfied: • A copy of the training record is submitted; and • The training completed is one of the CITI basic courses (required for an individual who is not affiliated with an institution or organization that has a Federal Wide Assurance/IRB); or • The training completed is comparable in rigor to one of the CITI basic courses.
Conclusion • In this module you learned: • What is the required training? • How CITI training is integrated in Click IRB
