AIM OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ARTS AND CULTURE The aim of the Department is to develop and preserve South African culture toensure social cohesion and nation-building. 2
C DEPARTMENT OF ARTS AND CULTURE orporate goals • Develop and promote arts and culture in South Africa and mainstream its role in social development. • Develop and promote the official languages of South Africa and enhance the linguistic diversity of the country. • Improve economic and other development opportunities for South African arts and culture nationally and globally through mutually beneficial partnerships, thereby ensuring the sustainability of the sector. 3
C DEPARTMENT OF ARTS AND CULTURE orporate goals • Develop and monitor the implementation ofpolicy, legislation and strategic direction for the identification, conservation and promotion of cultural heritage. • Guide, sustain and develop the archival, heraldic and information resources of the nation to empower citizens through full and open access to these resources. 4

L DEPARTMENT OF ARTS AND CULTURE egislative programme: 2004 • Legal Deposit Amendment Bill Bill is intended to streamline the current Act in lieu of the last 7 years experience Time scale: June 2005 • SA Geographical Names Council Amendment Bill Bill is intended to amendment the current Act to bring the Act in line with the PFMA and Administrative Justice Act and to empower provinces to perform functions related to geographical names Time scale: June 2005 19
