Project 28 Report Attracting Industry Participants to Our Conferences For Computer Society Internal Use Only
Project Goals • Identify needs (value-add) of potential Industry participants that can be integrated into current CS conference infrastructure • Provide more venues and opportunities for Industry authors and participants • create Intellectual Property in CSDL / Xplore • Provide more relevant IP of immediate use by commercial organizations • Share existing best practices of Industry workshops and tracks with both TC and their sponsor Conference Steering Committees (CSC); practices such as peer-review and CSDL publications • Experiment with Industry leadership roles in each TC to jump-start Industry workshops and tracks; add new Industry leadership position on the Conference Organizing Committee • Technical Co-sponsor existing successful Industry conferences such as SSTC or ASQ Software Division or IPQC conferences • Attract more Industry members into CS & Technical Committees (TC) For Computer Society Internal Use Only

What Do Industry Participants Look For in a Conference? • Immediate return on investment • What can I bring back to my workplace that I can use in my job tomorrow? • How can I make the business case to my management regarding business value received? • Tools, Toys, and Technology Exposure • Exhibitor (Presenter) demonstrations • Swag • Exposure to cutting edge technology • Attractive venue • Notable keynoters • Lightweight submission/review process • Presentations vs. papers For Computer Society Internal Use Only
What Issues Cause Industry Participants To Go Elsewhere? • Foreign Travel • For US-based participants, very difficult to justify international travel • For Non-US-based participants, potential visa issues • Competition with disciple/domain specific practitioner conferences, e.g. • STARWEST (Testing) • JAVA Symposium • QUEST (Software Quality) • Heavyweight submission/review process For Computer Society Internal Use Only
Some Small Successes – CP 2010, IEEE Computing Professionals Conference • April 2010, at ETS in Montreal, Canada • Three keynote presentations • Ten practitioner presentations • Three workshops • Industrial Software Evolution and Maintenance Processes (WISEMP) • Gaming Technology Standards • Professional Development of IT • Lightweight submission/review process • Some small failures • Conference venue • Timing coincided with two other major software engineering conferences • The ash cloud For Computer Society Internal Use Only
Project Goals • Provide more relevant IP of immediate use by commercial organizations • Share existing best practices of Industry workshops and tracks with both TC and their sponsor Conference Steering Committees (CSC); practices such as peer-review and CSDL publications • Experiment with Industry leadership roles in each TC to jump-start Industry workshops and tracks; add new Industry leadership position on the Conference Organizing Committee • Technical Co-sponsor existing successful Industry conferences such as SSTC or ASQ Software Division or IPQC conferences • Identify needs (value-add) of potential Industry participants that can be integrated into current CS conference infrastructure • Provide more venues and opportunities for Industry authors and participants • create Intellectual Property in CSDL / Xplore • Provide more relevant IP of immediate use by commercial organizations • Share existing best practices of Industry workshops and tracks with both TC and their sponsor Conference Steering Committees (CSC); practices such as peer-review and CSDL publications • Experiment with Industry leadership roles in each TC to jump-start Industry workshops and tracks; add new Industry leadership position on the Conference Organizing Committee • Technical Co-sponsor existing successful Industry conferences such as SSTC or ASQ Software Division or IPQC conferences • Attract more Industry members into CS & Technical Committees (TC) For Computer Society Internal Use Only
Some Small Successes – US DoD Systems and Software Engineering Technology Conference • IEEE S2ESC/TCSE track since 1998 • Technical Co-Sponsorship since 2008 • The first non-government co-sponsor in the 22-year history of the conference • CSDP/CSDA training and exam offered as part of the conference For Computer Society Internal Use Only

A Simple Survey • Which of your conferences currently has an industry/practitioners track? • By conference, what percentage of your submitters are from industry? • By conference, what percentage of your attendees are from industry? • Do you have industry sponsors for any of your conference events? • Do you have a commercial exhibitors for any of your conferences? For Computer Society Internal Use Only
