Project Overview Problem Statement Due to the depletion of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas, the need for alternate fuel sources has become prevalent. As future engineers, we will be continually faced with the task of designing environmentally friendly and efficient energy sources. The abundance of natural resources has been over looked in past years. Now renewable and relatively unlimited sources such as solar, wind and hydro energy are becoming the main focus of energy research and development. The task that we were presented with emphasized the use of wind energy. • Design Specifications • The system must be architecturally sound and aesthetically pleasing • Our solution must be able to adapt to existing structures and newly developed infrastructures • The design must focus on multiple small rotors that can produce the necessary energy output to support the building • Must choose a location in the Northeast United States • Design should utilize existing technology and build upon it with creative innovation
Building • Beaver Hall • Dimensions: 50 m by 35 m • 3991 MMBTU • My 20 Challenge Penn State is challenging itself to go green so for a week students are trying to reduce the amount of electricity they use, but why? • 5% of tuition is spent on energy cost • PSU uses as much energy each year as 30,000 American homes combined • The average electricity bill for PSU averages to $2 million per month
