Nature Deficit Disorder Environmental Issue
What is it/ Causes? • Caused by the electronic age • Disconnect with nature • Kids more drawn to indoors- video games • “Nature-deficit disorder is not a medical condition; it is a description of the human costs of alienation from nature. This alienation damages children and shapes adults, families, and communities. There are solutions, though, and they’re right in our own backyards.”
Risk Factors & Side Effects • Obesity • Fear of nature • Lack of imagination • SAD • ADD/ADHD • Anxiety • Stress • Loneliness • Lack of creativity • Poor physical fitness • Poor school performance • Poor eyesight • Vitamin D deficiency
How to Fix • Have kids play outside • Have more imaginative play • Teach kids about the environment • Don’t have TV or computer in bedroom • Limit TV time • “No Child Left Inside”
10 Steps a Parent Can Follow to Prevent • Be a role model • Plan a monthly/weekly surprise outdoor adventure • Organize a monthly outing with your child’s school • Follow AAP’s (American Academy of Pediatrics) guidelines & limit TV/ video game to 1-2 hrs daily • Take a daily/ weekly walk together as a family after dinner • Register your child for an outdoor summer camp • Go camping • Plant a garden • Buy a field guide • Link-up with one of your local/ national organizations
