Fort Donelson Facts • Battle started February 11 ended February 16, 1862. • This was one of the first major union victories of the civil war. • Grant moved his army conducting several small attacks on the fort. Weakening the south. • Floyd tried a sneak attack on the union to create an escape route but Grant was away from the battlefield at the begging of the attack and finally rose a counter attack causing Floyd to give up.
Armies and Losses • The battle was a little lopsided the north had roughly 24,531 and the south about 16,171. • The north lost only about 507 soldiers, had about 1,976 injured and another 208 captured or missing. • The south really took a loss with about 327 deaths, 1127 wounded and about 12,392 captured or missing.
Aftermath • This victory opened some major water ways for northern forces. • Fort Henry was also a major union victory that really helped the union win this battle.
