Who Are We • Albert Goddard. Member of Service User and Carer Research Audit Network (SUCRAN) • Overseas commissioning and planning, implementation and evaluation of SU and Carer led research/audit within Leicester and Leicestershire as set by the management committee of Peoples Forum and Genisis. • Supported by Dr Jim Doher, De Montfort University

Mental Health Research Network (MHRN) Heart of England • Topic Specific Network • Cover geographical area of West Midlands, Leicester, Northampton and Rutland • Work in partnership with service users, carers interested in PPI. • Support members of the research community
Initial Steps • MHRN held several seminars and identified the needs of our members. • Captured ideas for research: Personalisation and Self Identity Physical impairment and mental health (focusing on hearing impairment) Advocacy
The Journey Begins • Expression of interest gained from SUCRAN • Fit their aims and objectives Audit against Mental Health Charter Carers Audit Services User Experience of Mental Health Services Advocacy
Rational • Service Users stated their concern that both activity and outcomes of services were variable across the region. This was confirmed by a knowledge of inconsistencies within Leicestershire advocacy services. • Funding given by MHRN complemented the budget allocated for the work by SUCRAN (which was funded by City and County PCTs in Leicestershire)

Aims and Objectives • The approach will be action research based as SUCRAN hopes the outcomes will have a direct influence on training, practice, policy and satisfaction, and will form the basis of a scoping exercise to consider the training and provision of advocacy services across the Midlands
Aims and Objectives • Establish the range and scope of advocacy services in the UK • Clarify the need for advocacy and its various manifestations • Set benchmarks and standards for training and education of Advocates • Identify the wants and needs of service users requiring advocacy • Measure to what extent wants and needs are being met by providers • Recommend essential terms of reference for organisations • Recommend role parameters for workers
Next Step • Once the recommendations have been established SUCRAN will seek funding to audit against the targets, and promote a sustainable development of roles and services, working with statutory, voluntary and independent providers together with those who commission and support services.
Service user led idea • Good working relationship. Shared good practice. Offer of external support and guidance • Costs shared (maybe not 50 -50! Every little helps) • Opportunity for service user members of MHRN outside LNR to be actively involved. • Opportunities for SUCRAN members to be engaged in research within larger geographical area.
