BioWeb Addresses … • Current biomass literature is difficult to piece together • Scattered • Fragmented • Inconsistent • Not entirely accessible for a wide range of audiences • For example, researchers, grade school teachers, grandmas, policymakers
Objective • Develop an online resource (encyclopedia) of everything biomass • Comprehensive, consistent, and vetted content • Tailored to various audiences • Using best available technology to develop, deliver, and maintain • Easy to use and navigate • Need it ASAP
Features: Level of Detail • Technical • Full academic version, including data, graphics, technical jargon, references • General • Newspaper article version, no technical jargon, simplified language • At a Glance • Non-technical summary version, short, concise • On-the-fly switching among levels
Features: Self Directed Output • A step beyond a linear presentation of organized material • A step toward a smart search resulting in customized output • Pre-set graphical “slices” of biomass topics from which a user may navigate and choose
Content Management System • Enterprise Web content management server system that streamlines and facilitates Web content authoring and delivery • Separates content from format • Provides dynamic content delivery by assembling content objects and templates as pages load • Selected Microsoft Content Management Server 2002 • Microsoft SQL Server for content storage • Microsoft Word for content authoring • Requires only a Web browser to participate

Content Development • Research section coordinators responsible for identifying and assembling content authors and other section contributors • Individual authors develop and submit content (Web-based) according to authoring guidelines • First filter is the research section coordinator • Second filter is authorized and selected content reviewers • Third filter is technical editors • Final approval required from original / subsequent authors
User Interface • User selects an entry level of detail • User selects a starting point • Search metadata for keywords • Explore a graphical classification browser • Browse by topic • Active embedded links • Drill down/up navigation • Continuous detail selection options

Content Updating & Mgmt • Sun Grant Association has a plan in place to keep the BioWeb running and updated • Potential contributors may request authorization to edit or author content in various capacities • Requires approval of credentials • All updates require a review and approval prior to acceptance • Opportunities for periodic (annual, bi-annual) general review and updates
Project Timeline • To date: • Outline developed, continuous refinement • Content authors submitting material • Content being reviewed, edited • Website, database, MCMS customization development • Content submission deadline: December 2006 • Limited beta version testing beginning February 2007 • Public launch scheduled for March 2007 2006 2007 11 12 3 1 10 2 9 Content pre-approval by Section Coordinators (SCs). Content modification if needed. External content review/ modification request process. Technical editing Process begins. Non-technical summaries written for General & At-a-Glance Web views. Final content approval by SCs, original authors, BioWeb editors BioWeb beta-testing and site refinement. Publication of papers to online journal Official Launch: BioWeb site goes live for the general public. Maintenance phase begins. Monthly: Leadership e-meetings (ongoing 2-5 yr. )
