What will FMs be doing? • Monitoring the elections in their respective regions to ensure transparency and fairness. • Looking out for any type of electoral fraud, violence, intimidation and the like. • Reporting in real time from their respective regions on any newsworthy election activity
Gadgets and tools for the field • All FMs will be armed with ‘just a Smartphone’ • A variety of tools will be used within to report in real time. These tools will be: • Face book • Twitter • Text messaging • Camera
Training expectations • FMs be trained enough to report in real time from the field with just a Smartphone • Be able to use a variety of social media tools for reporting • Learn the essence of honest, safe and accurate journalism • Be able to unearth stories which may otherwise be overlooked by the mainstream • Give birth to a new breed of citizen journalists
What is social media? • Media is an instrument on communication, like a newspaper or a radio, so social media would be a social instrument of communication. • Most popular mediums for social media are face book, twitter and YouTube. • Facts: An average of 618 million people use Face book on daily basis; approximately 175 million tweets were posted yesterday.
Face book • Face book is a social networking website that allows registered users to create profiles, upload photos and video, send messages and keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues. The site includes public features such as: • Groups - allows members who have common interests to find each other and interact. • Events - allows members to publicize an event, invite guests and track who plans to attend. • Pages - allows members to create and promote a public page built around a specific topic.
