Surface Area • Surface area is the sum of all the exterior areas. • Think of it like wrapping paper. How much would it take to cover the entire shape?
Nets • To find the surface area, we can break the three-dimensional shape up into two-dimensional parts. This representation is called a net.
Creating a Net • To create a net, you must first examine the figure you are trying to deconstruct. • How many faces (sides) does it have? • What are the measurements of each side? • Are any of these faces (sides) congruent?
Let’s Look at a Cube • All of the sides are congruent which tells us that all of the faces are congruent. • There are six faces • Find the area of one face and multiply by 6 (the number of faces) 3 3 9 un² 3 3 3 3 3 nits 3 3 9 un² 3 9 un² 3 9 un² 3 9 un² 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 9 un² 3

Cubes are easy, let’s look at a rectangular prism • A rectangular prism has 3 pairs of congruent faces: • Top and bottom • Front and back • Left and right
