Africa • Music was used as a form of communication between the tribe and tribes that were surrounding • Used as a spiritual ritual in many important ceremonies, Holy days, special events, or gatherings such as weddings, births, becoming of a man, and even battles • Dancing is involved with all of the concerts in the village

  4. Caribbean/Latin • Used for communication as well as Africa • During slave trade from Africa, slaves brought instruments with them and their cultures • Cultures and music blended to create new music • Also played for religion such as Cuba for Santeria the BATA drums • In Merengue the Tambora from the Dominican Republic

  5. Instruments • Cuba- Congas Bongos and cowbells also Bata and tres • Dominican Republic- GuiraTambora • Brazil- Surdopandeirotumbaou

  6. Middle East • The music is a combination of many styles from Spain to Greece, Africa and Egypt • Mostly in Arabic and has affiliations with religions such as Islam, Judaism, and Christianity • Scales are different then Western in many cases four tones for example • Played in different ways coming from both percussive background and classical from Europe
