  1. Library Resources to Support Common Core State Standards Science and Social Studies

  2. Topics we will cover Lexile reading levels, what that means, and how to find resources. Research component of Common Core Standards and how to best achieve those standards. How using library resources will teach students how to research safely, effectively, and ethically.

  3. Text Complexity and Lexile Levels • Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently. • Lexile measurement is quantitative and based on sentence length and word frequency. • Qualitative dimensions of text complexity are meaning or purpose; structure; language conventionality. • Reader and task considerations include motivation, knowledge, and experiences and complexity of the task assigned and the questions posed.

  4. Q: What is Lexile? A: A system for leveling books and readers A book, article (newspaper, magazine, journal) or piece of text gets a Lexile text measure as analyzed by MetaMetrics Based on two strong predictors: word frequency and sentence length. Range from Beginner Reader (BR) to 2000. Meant as a good starting point in the book-selection process. Note: “Many other factors affect the relationship between a reader and a book, including its content, the age and interests of the reader, and the design of the actual book.”

  5. Q: Where do we see it in the CCSS? A: ELA: Appendix A “Measures of text complexity must be aligned with college and career readiness expectations for all students.” “MetaMetrics has realigned its Lexile ranges to match the Standards’ text complexity grade bands.”

  6. Where do we find Lexile levels? Books http://www.lexile.com/Determine lexile level for books. Search by title, using “” for ex. “new moon” http://www.scholastic.com/teachers Find and level books with the Book Wizard. Select reading level system – Lexile. Magazine, Newspaper, and Journal Articles http://destiny.bbpschools.org VRC databases. http://www.lexile.com/analyzer/Lexile Analyzer will analyze books and articles you submit after you register.

  7. How do we find articles with lexile levels? Virtual Reference Collection under Databases. See handout for databases that tell you lexile levels in your results. Another strategy is to look for scholarly journal articles.

  8. Research to Build and Present Knowledge Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a question or solve a problem, narrow or broaden the inquiry when appropriate; synthesize multiple sources on the subject, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation. Gather relevant information from multiple authoritative print and digital sources, assess the strengths and limitations of each source in terms of the specific task, purpose, and audience; integrate information into the text selectively to maintain the flow of ideas, avoiding plagiarism and overreliance on any one source and following a standard format for citation. Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

  9. Two Other Resources for Research Turnitin. See me to set up account. It detects plagiarism in student work. Works Cited. NoodleBib is a citation database for students to cite sources including books, databases, web sites, pictures from Google Images, and videos from YouTube to name just a few. Use of both of these resources prevents plagiarism and promotes ethics in research. Best of all, skills are interdisciplinary and teachers are working collaboratively.
