Classroom Expectations Grade 3. Academic Year 2014 - 2015. Welcome. My name is Roslind Steensma and I am from South Africa. This is my sixth year at ENS, teaching in Grade 3. I teach Grade 3C and I am also the Grade 3 Co-ordinator.

  1. Classroom Expectations Grade 3 Academic Year 2014 - 2015

  2. Welcome • My name is Roslind Steensma and I am from South Africa. • This is my sixth year at ENS, teaching in Grade 3. I teach Grade 3C and I am also the Grade 3 Co-ordinator. • I would like ask each Grade 3 teacher to now introduce themselves: • Ms Entisar – 3A • Ms Louise – 3B • Ms Alexandra - 3D • Ms Liezl – 3E • Mr Anthony -3F • Ms Susan – 3G

IB PYP • ENS is an IB school and we follow the PYP as our program of inquiry. • This is an internationally recognized program and ENS has received accreditation. • PYP encourages children to be life long learners by following the Essential Elements to better their learning each day. • Learner Profile • Attitudes • Key Concepts • Transdisciplinary Skills • Action Cycle

English • In English we cover the follow skills: • Reading • Writing • Spelling • Phonics (how words/letters sound) • Listening and Speaking • Comprehension • All these skills are taught using a variety of resources, including Reading Street, Oxford Reading Tree and Jolly Phonics • Please encourage daily reading, writing and speaking in English.

Maths • Every Day Maths – a programme that ENS has adopted. • Using EDM the following skills will be covered in Grade 3: • Basic number knowledge • Addition and Subtraction – Quarter 1 & 2 • Multiplication and Division – Quarter 3 & 4 • Time – both digital and analogue • Data Handling • Measurement – Metric and U.S Standard • Geometry • Money – U.S Currency

Science and Social Studies • Closely integrated with PYP and the Units of Inquiry • We will cover 6 Units of Inquiry in Grade 3 • Children will be expected to complete a Performance Task within each UOI • These PT’s will vary throughout the year • Examples are: • Written, illustrated projects and journals • 3D construction out of clay or cardboard-like materials • Research and guidance will be required from parents • PT will be done both at school and at home

  7. Assessments • Grades are based on the accumulation of points. • Points are based on: • Classroom Assessments(eg.Spelling and Mental Math Tests) – 40% • Performance Tasks(eg.Projects) – 40% • Guided Classroom Practice(eg.Class activities) -10% • Independent Practice(eg. homework) – 10% • All grades can be viewed on PowerSchool • Please do not place too high an expectation on your child.

Homework • Given out at the start of the week • Completed homework is returned to teachers on a Thursday morning • A little should be completed each day as follows: • Reading (about 10-20 minutes) – ORT or Library book • Spelling (Spelling Test every Thursday) • Maths (Mental Maths Test every Thursday) • Consolidation work or Projects (such as Performance Tasks) • Please ensure your child has a homework folder.

  9. Food and Bedtime • Healthy Snack everyday. • Enough for both breaks. • Water bottles everyday. • Please ensure your child goes to bed at a reasonable time every night.

In closing… • We are looking forward to a productive and exciting year with your children. • An email from your child’s teacher will be sent to you soon to confirm your email address. • If you have any queries or concerns you can email your child’s teacher. • If you would like to see us, please make an appointment with the PCO. • Keep the Channels of Communication open. • Teamwork between parents and teachers will ensure the best for your child. • You may now meet briefly with your child’s teacher should you so wish.
