  1. The Cutting Edge By: Matthew Anderson

  2. Why are NC and CNC important in our world today?

  3. What Is NC? • NC means (Numerical Control) • Invented 1940’s 1950’s by John T. Parson • Programmed - Punch cards - Paper tape - Binary - Point-to-point

  4. Purpose of NC? • Air Force • Repeatability • Productivity • Cut Costs

  5. Industrial Factors of NC • Changed the landscape of industry • Expanded manufacturing • Demand for skilled workers

  6. What is CNC? • Computerized Numerical Control • Invented by MIT accredited to John Parson • Programmed - Computer on machine - M-code G-code

  7. Purpose of CNC • Efficent - productivity • Effective - Cost - precision - repeatibility

  8. CNC continued.. Fig. CNC HASS Mill Fig. MCU (Micro-Computer Unit)

  9. Industrial Factors of CNC • Change the landscape of industry • Demand for skilled labor • Expanded manufacturing capabilities • Use of computers

  10. Skills needed for NC & CNC • Proficient in Math • Classes in NC or CNC operations/programs • Limits of tooling • Read and interpret technical drawings • Ability to monitor operation

  11. NC Increased capabilities More productive than manual Decrease human error CNC Greater operator efficiency programs can be stored in the MCU Increase productivity Reduction of human error Advantages of NC & CNC

  12. NC Time it takes to program Programs cannot be changed (paper tape) No complex shapes Lose of excess material CNC Increase in electrical maintenance Retraining of labor Loss of excess material Cost of machines Viruses possible Disadvantages of NC & CNC

  13. Conclusion • catalyst for technological advances • large amount of what we do or own is closely related • modernize our society • opened the door for future advancement
