AWIPS II Update Shannon White
AWIPS I Status • Have had monthly AWIPS I builds to address security patches and critical bug fixes • A few builds have contained new functionality • Bulleted hazard products • These builds will slow down to quarterly beginning with 9.8 • OB9.7 is deploying now and OB9.8 is planned to deploy at the end of February
AWIPS II • AWIPS II is currently in dual operations at OAX • Two separate AWIPS systems with only one “operational” at any given time • AWIPS I continues to be primary system with tests of 1-3 days at a time on the AWIPS II system with neighbors providing backup • System tests happening monthly at NWSHQ • Forecasters test fixes, particularly items OAX has not tested • Marine/Tropical
New Schedule • OAX to cutover to fulltime AWIPS II operations soon • Decision point soon! • BOU to use GSD system as a separate AWIPS II testbed • Official OT&E does not start until entrance criteria met • Highest priority issues addressed • Stability and performance meet established criteria • Required local apps migrated
The following statements do not represent the opinion of NWS management or Raytheon
Where Are We Really? • OAX issues were addressed effectively and in a timely manner • Have done very little with marine and tropical testing • Almost nothing done with RFCs • National centers seem separate from the WFO effort • Despite much of the same functionality between the two • Local app migration getting more seriously underway but continue to have knowledge gaps of how to migrate the apps • Need significant planning and resources to juggle multiple sites and testing/migration efforts
What You Can Do • Get serious about converting local apps and configuring your local ADAM machine • Encourage forecasters to test on the local ADAM • Continue to need marine/tropical products tested • Catalogue everything, big and small, in testing via TTs with the NCF • Be vocal about your experiences with your regional AWIPS rep • Josh Watson (ER) and Eric Howieson (SR) • Now is not the time to sugarcoat; we are too close to field deployment
