  1. Classification, recoding and adding new field tags with Bibexcel

  2. Suppose you wish to classify or recode country names into continents. Then start by making a frequency list.

  3. The cit-file has all names. Open the cit-file in Excel.

  4. Edit the cit-file like this and sort ascending by column A. Then save as text with the name “continents.cla”

  5. Click on file list and press F5 to refresh. Select continents.cla and double click in the box Type new file name here. Select the oux-file with country names and then run Add classify/Binary search. Answer YES to print if not found and NO to multiple hits. Binary search is very fast and works with very long classification lists (cla-files)

  6. The cll-file has continents in fourth column. If a country wasn’t found, that would appear as not found and also in the not-file.

  7. Put 1/4 here and then run Edit outfiles/Select columns

  8. To remove duplicates, select the col-file and make these settings and then press Start You have now an oux-file with continents!

  9. Sometimes, for future use you may wish to add continents as a new field into a new doc-file. Select file with new data Double click and type a new doc file name Name of new tag Old tag Click here

  10. DONE! New doc-file and New field
