  1. * IPUMS-International * Using Integrated unit records for demographic and health research:Local, regional, national, and international* * *Robert McCaa, Minnesota Population Centerrmccaa@umn.eduwww.ipums.org/international see also: www.hist.umn.edu/~rmccaa/ipums_iassh.ppt INDIAN ASSOCIATION FOR SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HEALTH (iassh) eIGHTH CONFERENCE

  2. * Outline *Integrating census samples and metadata for research and policy: IPUMS-InternationalUniversity of Minnesota Population Center • 7 tutorials: www.hist.umn.edu/~rmccaa/IPUMSI/ipumsi_explorer.ppt • Note to Indian researchers • IPUMS-International: Unit record data for the social sciences and health research and teaching • How to select cases (see “Step 4” in the brouchure) • How to customize sample sizes (see “Step 5” in the brouchure) • Usage statistics and publications • Invitation to use and cooperate

  3. www.hist.umn.edu/~rmccaa/IPUMSI/ipumsi_explorer.ppt 7 tutorials on using the IPUMS-International web-site to obtain census documentation and person recordshttps://international.ipums.org/international First, click here to explore the IPUMS-International website--or www.ipums.org and click international. Then click a highlighted word for instructions on any of the 7 tutorials below: • Register: to access microdata • Explore metadata: samples, variables, and sources • Get data: create custom-tailored extracts • Download data and codebooks • Study Indian emigrants using IPUMS

  4. IPUMS web-sitesare “event-driven”.Click a link to explore in any order. User registration, conditions of use license View variables (integrated metadata) Get data: create a custom-tailored extract: select countries, years, sub-populations, & variables View sample descriptions (integrated metadata) Link to Official Statistical Agency home pages Bibliography: add yours; view others

  5. www.ipums.org All use the same extract engine and features 1880 100%!! 1960+ 1850-2009 1790+ 1962+ 1960+ 2003+ 5 USA-only databases

  6. 2. Special Note to Indian Researchers: • Microdata of India in IPUMS: NSSO Schedule 10 samples under MOU with MOSPI • In 1999, the RG of India was invited to be a founding member of IPUMS-International • To date, with 90 official statistical offices participating…The Government of India has not yet decided to participate--discussions continue • A lesson in Indian democracy from the prime minister’s office (Sept. 2005): organize academic support • With your support, success—samples for 1991, 2001 and ultimately 2011—may be possible

  7. What are microdata? They are the individual responses to a survey, such as: NSS Sch. 10 (1983).Each line on the form is one unit (microdata) record.

  8. 3. IPUMS-International: Unit record data for social science and health research and teaching • 325 million integrated person records in 159 samples, representing 55 countries • Annually, samples for 6-8 countries are integrated into the IPUMS-International database. • Samples for 2010 round censuses are integrated as they become available • Hundred of variables are integrated: • Demographic • Education • Economic • Disability • Dwelling

  9. IPUMS-International darkgreen = microdata available to users(Jun ‘11: 60 countries, 181 censuses, 390 millionunit records)green = preparation (30 countries, 80 censuses)light green = participation under consideration IPUMS-International: a global collaboratory Founding members CB, USA INSSE, France INEGI, Mexico ONS-UK IBGE, Brazil NBS, China CSO, India CBS, Vietnam PCO, Pakistan, Statistics Canada >90 in total >5 thousand users India: 13th in users NSSO samples: 26th in usage Mollweide projection

  10. IPUMS-International: Unit record data for social science and health research and teaching • Samples are integrated: identical concepts have the same codes in all samples • Universal population coverage and large sample sizes • Robust analysis of • Fertility and mortality levels: own-child methods, reports on births and deaths in the household in the past 12 months.  • Disability and access to health care.  • Household sanitation variables (water supply, toilet, and sewage facilities) to track progress toward Millennium Development Goals.

  11. IPUMS-International: Unit record data for social science and health research and teaching • Complement one own’s surveys with population data from IPUMS-International • Complement Demographic and Health Surveys or malaria-treatment data • The purpose of IPUMS is to facilitate ready access to unit record data for analysis—NOT TO REPLACE OTHER DATA!

  12. “IPUMS-I is an excellent resource for teaching…” -- David Lam, president-elect Pop. Assoc. Amer. • Free, easy access to data for many countries and censuses • Large sample sizes: • Make it possible to include many different variables in a regression… multi-level model… • Produce separate estimates for population sub-groups • Easy to extract samples with a target sample size (e.g., 50mb) • Easy to revise an extract for a larger size or to include more countries, censuses, variables or sub-populations • Students show a great deal of creativity in using IPUMS-I • Skills acquired have an immediate pay-off when applying for jobs (e.g., World Bank), graduate school, etc.

  13. 4. How to “Select Cases”. Example: DisabilityFirst, explore the metadata: list of variables for selected countries

  14. Continue to explore the metadata: variable definition, comparability discussion, etc.

  15. Continue to explore the metadata: comparability for specific countries

  16. Continue to explore the metadata: comparability for specific countries

  17. Continue to explore the metadata: codes and case counts for every sample selected

  18. Second: Click the box to include the variable Third: Click “select cases” box

  19. Fourth: Scroll down, select “India”, then “Continue to next step” Click here, to select every person in a household containing a person born in India

  20. Step 5. Customize sample sizeIf sample size is too large, click “customize”, otherwise “Continue to next step” Tip: do a small test. Customize at 0.1% If this works, then revise the extract and customize to 1%, 10% or whatever

  21. Step 5. Customize sample sizeEnter a number (thousands) or % to change any or all samples (=>10k households) Extract engine recomputes weights/expansion factors

  22. 6. Invitation to explore, use and cooperate • Explore the metadata, microdata and extract system: • www.ipums.org • www.hist.umn.edu/~rmccaa/IPUMSI/ipumsi_explore.ppt • In 1999, our dream: integrate samples of 21 countries in 10 years • Thanks to generous cooperation of 55 National Statistical Offices • Undreamed technological innovations • By 2010, integrated samples for 55 countries • 159 samples, 325 million person records • Number of users and usage far exceeded expectations • For the 2010 decade, our dream: • Double (2x) the number of integrated samples to 300 • Triple (3x) the number of users to 12,000 • Quadruple (4x) research output

  23. A final note:Not all data are integrated. Special modules on fertility, mortality and migration
