  2. What is Common Core? MISSION STATEMENT: The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.

  3. Summer 2012 Charge from the Education Committee: Teachers representing all buildings created a two-year implementation plan to coordinate communication, professional development, and curriculum mapping for ELA and Math.

  4. Committees for Common Core Common Core Leadership Committee (September-May) Curriculum Development of ELA and Math (January- April) Summer Work -Curriculum development and resource allocations (June-July)

  5. August 2012 -Implementation plan approved by the D34 Education Committee. -Education Committee asked Nan Ross-Meridith and Beth Tsoumas to create a Common Core Leadership Team to coordinate the work of the implementation plan; the CCLT would have representation from each building to provide consistent communication.

  6. September-May 2012-13 • Leadership team met 2-3 monthly • Created and presented monthly Building Councils Professional Development sessions on specific Common Core elements. • Prepared March in-service day with Laura Beltchenko • Contributed monthly articles to the District 34's "Up to the MInute" (Staff Periodical) • -Looked at potential structures for our curriculum maps. Reviewed several states’ CCSS curriculum maps and selected a variety of resources to be used by the Common Core Mapping Committees (ELA and Math). • implemented Book Club using The Pathways to the Common Core by Lucy Caulkins Book Club
