  4. EARLY INFLUENCES • The Ramones were influenced by the rock band The Beach Boys.

  5. Malcolm Mclaren Malcolm Mclaren started his Punk career by managing the New York Dolls. Mclaren later started the Sex Pistols.

  6. The Ramones The Ramones were leaders of the New York Punk movement. The Ramones started by playing shows at the club CBGB’s, but later helped bring punk into the mainstream. They have been described as heavy metal bubblegum. One of the Ramones biggest hits was Blitzkreig Bop. “Hey Ho Let’s Go”

  7. The New York Dolls The New York Dolls consisted of David Johansen, Johnny Thunders, Arthur Kane, Syl Sylavin, and Billy Murcia. The New York Dolls inspired their former manager, Malcolm McLaren, to create one of the biggest English Punk bands, the Sex Pistols.

  8. The Velvet Underground The Velvet Underground consist of Lou Reed on lead guitar and vocals, John Cale on bass, piano and viola, Sterling Morrison on rhythm guitar and bass and Maureen (Moe) Tucker on drums.

  9. New York Clubs CBGB’s The club in New York that played the largest part in the movement was CBGB and OMFUG. CBGB stands for Country Blue Grass Blues, which was originally the type of music scheduled to play there.

  10. Sub-culture • Besides the music and clubs, there is a certain sub-culture that goes along with Punk. The clothes, the hair, and the attitude are what truly define Punk Rock.

  11. Punk Today Not much has changed. The attitude, the subculture, and the fashion.

  15. Early Influences • Bands from New York influenced many English bands. The Sex Pistols one of the most famous bands to come from England were formed because of bands in New York.

  16. The Sex Pistols The Sex Pistols were a leader of the English punk movement. The Sex pistols formed in 1976. The Sex Pistols were Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Sid Vicious.

  17. The Clash Another leader from England was the Clash. The original line-up for the Clash was Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, Tory Crimes, and Keith Levene.

  18. The Damned • The Damned were one of the most important bands, as far as bringing Punk into the mainstream. The Damned’s first single was New Rose, which you are hearing now. They released New Rose in October of 1976. New Rose was the first Punk Single to be released in England.

  19. England’s Clubs • One important club in London was the 100 ClubA new type of music was introduced to the 100 Club on September 21 1976. The 100 Club was home to a very well remembered show. This show was known as the 100 Club Festival. The show included the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Damned, the Subway Sect. and the Banshees.

  20. Subculture • England’s Punk scene and sub-culture was similar to the culture in New York. The fashion was similar. T-shirts, shorts, and even safety pins were all worn in England. The Mohawk hairstyle was originally created in England, and adopted by Punks in New York.

  21. Punk Today • Many of the great English artist have passed away. Joe Strummer, the front man for the Clash died in 2002. Sid Vicious, the bassist for the Sex Pistols, who had been charged with the murder of his wife Nancy Spungen, died tragically of a heroin overdose in 1979.
