What is Bipolar Disorder? • Bipolar Disorder is when people go back and forth in there moods in a short period of time.(Moods swings) • Ex: Happy irritable
A Little History…. • First was noticed in the second century. • Aretaeus Cappadocia noticed symptoms of mania and depression, and that they could somehow be liked together. • In 1975 Jules Falret recorded findings of Maniac Depressive Psychosis, a psychiatric disorder. • In 1952 it was discovered that bipolar was genetic. • In 1980 the term bipolar replaced maniac –depressive disorder. Research differed adult and childhood bipolar disorder.
What Are The Causes of Bipolar? There are many causes of Bipolar disorder….. • Genetic, environmental factors, stress, substance abuse, medication, seasonal changes, sleep deprivation • Environmental- Life event alcohol or drug abuse, or normal problems. • Genetic- Biological Disorder occurs in specific parts of the brain. Neurotransmitters, or chemical messengers, in the brain cause bipolar disorder. • There is still no exact reason for bipolar disorder.
So… What are the symptoms? • People with this disorder are prone to either mania or depression. While, other alternate between two types of episodes. • Frequent mood disruptions and only a few over a lifetime.
Symptoms…… • Depression: • Feeling hopeless , sad empty • Irritability • Fatigue or not very much energy • Appetite or weight changes • Sleep problems • Felling worthless • Thoughts of death or Suicide. • Mixed Episodes: • Includes depression combined with agitation, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, distractibility and racing thoughts. • Combination of high energy and low mood makes a high risk of suicide. • Mania: • Feeling usually “high” optimistic • Extremely irritable • Unrealistic • Sleeping very little • Talking rapidly • Racing thoughts acting recklessly. Hypomania: Less severe form of mania.
How is it Diagnosed? • Talking openly with doctor about mood swings, behaviors and lifestyle habits, • Doctors take notes to diagnose. He nootes symptoms, the severity, length and frequency. • Diagnosed based upon criteria found within the latest edition of the diagnostic and statistical Manuallor Mental Disorders.
Cures… • Know the difference between your symptoms and your true self. Be open about your behaviors you want to change and set goals for making changes. • Medication also is a way to treat it. It will reduce the symptoms. • Not only is medication needed, also therapy, life changes, and social support.
Functional or Organic? • Bipolar disorder is a functional disorder because it has a psychological cause and it doesn’t involve brain damage. Its caused by a great depression and/or genetic.
