Purpose • As leaders, we should all be committed to the continuing Sailorizationof all enlisted attached onboard. Mentorship should consist of a formal pairing of junior members with more senior and experienced members, with a goal of fostering professional growth and developing specific competencies. • A successful mentorship relationship/program will provide the following: • Improve Sailors’ quality of life and build esprit de corps • Reinforce a culture of excellence • Improve retention efforts • Advance a higher number of qualified Sailors • Build rapport up and down the chain of command • Resolve and correct non-judicial punishments, counseling chits, and other minor deficiencies to the lowest level
Background • Mentoring provides opportunities for mentors and Sailors to improve their leadership, interpersonal and technical skills. • A formalized mentoring program should serve in conjunction with the traditional responsibility of all Sailors to help their Shipmates’ personal and professional development What we want to do: Develop Leadership Abilities Technical Proficiency Competitive Edge for Advancement Readiness and Willingness for their Return to the Fleet • How we do it: • Encourage Job Competency • Professional Military Knowledge • Personal Development • Higher Education • Adherence to Navy Core Values • With the ultimate goal of: • Improve Sailors’ Quality of Life • Reinforce a culture of Excellence • Improve Retention Efforts • Advance Higher Numbers of Qualified Sailors • Build Rapport up and down the CoC
What is Mentoring? Mentoring… is an open vista of new experiences and possibilities Mentoring… involves support, assistance, and guidance Mentoring… requires time and communication Mentoring… facilitates self-reliance in mentees Mentoring is… areciprocal learning partnership in which mentee and mentor agree to a partnership, where they will work collaboratively toward achievement of mutually defined goals that will develop a mentee’s skills, abilities, knowledge and/or thinking.
What Mentoring is NOT... • One person dominating, directing or controlling another’s decisions • Becoming dependent or reliant on someone else • Taking responsibility for another’s progress • A guarantee of advancement • Working outside the system • Being an expert in everything
Roles of a Mentor • Teaching • Guiding • Advising • Sponsoring • Role modeling behavior • Validating-goal setting • Counseling-emotional support • Motivating • Communicating
Roles of a Protégé • Be committed to learning • Be ready to challenge themselves • Be open to advice and guidance • Be interested in setting goals • Be a good listener and want feedback • Accept responsibility • Have a positive attitude
10 Reasons You Should Have a Mentor 1. Morale – Mentors help protégés develop self-confidence and a sense of purpose 2. Esteem – Mentors help build the self-esteem of their protégés, enabling them to go as high as they want to go in their careers. 3. Support – Mentors provide professional and development advice and psychological support 4. Counseling – Mentors facilitate informal exchanges about work and provide a confidential outlet for the protégé to discuss their concerns 5. Exposure – Mentors sponsor protégé’s exposure and visibility in an organization
