  2. Calm! Nothing to Fear • Those who are scared of conversation are usually terrified of silence. • They become so worried about what to say, that they don’t listen. • Don’t panic.

  3. Key to successStop, Look, Listen STOP—Don’t rush recklessly into talk to fill the silence. LOOK—Pay attention to the expression of the person to whom you are talking. LISTEN—Really listen. Actively listen (eye contact, reactions)

  4. Think before you speak • Most mistakes of conversation are caused by NOT thinking.

  5. Pleasant Talk • Ask questions • Avoid negative talk • Avoid generalizing by using “I” statements • Example: • Correct— “It seems to me… • “I believe…” • Incorrect— “That’s not true.” • “Those are terrible or wonderful” • Give appropriate compliments.

  6. Unpleasant Talker TypesBe a Gallant and not a Goofus • GOOFUS would… • be a bore. • be a complainer or whiner. • use his words to be cutting. • be a “know-it-all.” • talk too much. • gossip.

  7. Unpleasant Talker TypesBe a Gallant and not a Goofus • Gallant would… • notice if others were bored and change the subject. • keep the conversation positive. • use compliments. • recognize others for their knowledge. • listen as much as talk. • avoid gossip and follow the rule “don’t say anything about someone not present if you wouldn’t say it to her face (or his).
