Media Center Rules cont’dRespectful(media center staff, classmates, and other students) • Everybody’s ideas are important. • Wait to talk until you are called on. • When checking out books, be mindful of students who are in class and are trying to learn. • Use inside voices!
Rewards • Whole class rewards • Class earns books for good behavior • When bookshelf is full class will receive a reward e.g. game day, movie day, outside time • Individual rewards • Mystery person • Picked at the beginning of class • Students will find out at the end of class who the mystery person was. • If mystery person followed rules/directions they will pick from the treasure box at the end of class. • Reward for following rules/directions • Pick from treasure box
Consequences • Verbal warning • Removal from group and activities • Writing assignment • Note home to parents
Types of books • Non-fiction • Informational books, poetry, biographies, and fairytales and folktales. • Shelved according to Dewey Decimal system • Dewey number 000-999.999 & firs three letters of authors last name • Ex. The New York Giants 796.332 Ste

Book and Magazine Checkout • K and 1st -- one book (one week) • 2-5 – two books (or one book and one magazine) • Books can be checked out for two weeks, magazines for 3 days.
Check Out Procedures • Get correct shelf marker • Use shelf marker while you are searching for your book. • All shelf markers are in your teacher’s jar and have your barcode on it • When you find your books get in line at checkout computer • Scan shelf marker FIRST then scan books. • Scan the barcode that says Carolina Forest • If you hear this sound • or this one, you may not check out a book! • Return shelf marker to correct jar! (we are not responsible for lost sticks)
Check In • Scan book at check in computer • scan the barcode that reads Carolina Forest • Put book in correct bucket • If the spine label looks like this, it goes in the non-fiction bucket. • If the spine label looks like this: • Put it in the Everybody bucket • If the spine label look like this: • Put it in the Fiction bucket
Magazines • Check out • Pick the magazine you want • Put in the brown folder • Scan stick • Scan folder • Check In • Scan folder • Take magazine out of folder • Put folder back • Put magazine back
