#1 and #2 Divide words only between syllables. Do NOT divide one-syllable words.
#3 and #4 Do NOT divide contractions, abbreviations or numbers expresses as figures. Avoid dividing a word with fewer than six letters.
#5 Divide after – not before – a single letter syllable within the root of a word. If there are two single-vowel syllables together that are sounded separately, the words should be divided between these two syllables.
#6 Divide between double consonants ….unless the double consonants end the root word.
#7 and #8 Try to divide a word after a prefix or before a suffix, leaving the root word undivided. Divide solid compound words where the two words are joined.
#9 and #10 Divide hyphenated words after the hyphen. Avoid dividing the address for a Web site on the Internet or an email address. If you need to: • Break the address after the double slash. http://-www.carteret.edu • Break either before the @ symbol or before a dot. glc-“or” glc@carteret- @carteret.edu .edu
#11 Avoid dividing information that should be read as a unit. • A person’s first and last name. Harold Bass • A title with a name. Ms. Smith • The month and the year. June 2008 • The month, day, and the year. May 1, 2009 • A number with an abbreviation. 15 ft. • A street address 129 Gate Road
#12 through #15 • Leave at least two letters on the line with the hyphen, and carry over at least three letters (or two letters plus a punctuation mark.) • Ending two consecutive lines in hyphens is acceptable. Ending three or more consecutive lines in hyphens is NOT acceptable. • Avoid dividing the first line and the last full line of a paragraph. • Do not divide the last word on a page.
