  6. The state of the Hospitals • A move from an alms house or those with chronic illness to acute illness • Sanitary conditions were lacking • “Hospital Morale” • Have physical order • Ventilation • Clean drains and sewers • Appropriate diets • Clean dressings • Moral atmosphere

  7. The “Good” Nurse • Motherly/caring • Authoritative/disciplinarian • Strong moral beliefs • Physically able to perform some domestic duties • Have a sense of order • Learn some medical theory • Trustworthiness • Loyal to others • Obedient • Self disciplined

  8. Nursing Education was Born • Hospital based yet outside funded • Curriculum: • Skills • Order • Caring • Moral beliefs • Medical theories • Sister-hood concept

  9. The Science of Nursing • Used models of: • Hierarchy • Duty • Discipline • Garde-malade: “never found napping” • A Good Soldier: • Sparse quarters/rigid rules • Starched white uniforms • Caps

  10. There were problems.. • Physicians • Blind obedience or some autonomy • Fellow workers • Took years to get them trained, resistance • Student issues • Not always followed the rules • “family” set up with House Mother • Earn their stripes
