  3. The Good News! • You are only being asked to apply BEST PRACTICES to your classroom • You already do that!!!!!!

  4. What do my ELL students need from me? • Manipulatives! • Hands on activities • Differentiated instruction • Pictures, pictures, pictures • One-on-one instruction

  5. Facilitation in the Classroom Adjust your presentation • Face the students when speaking • Clearly indicate important ideas • Focus on students meaning not the grammar • Increase wait time for answers

  6. When speaking to ELL student • Ask questions in simple language • Ask for elaboration “tell me more” • Be a good listener • Provide difficult words

  7. Best Practice Strategies • Establish a routine • Write assignments and schedules on the same place • Assign buddies • Include students in all activities in some way • Use graphic organizers

  8. Best Practices cont • Use hands on manipulative when possible • Modify assignments to meet student’s ability level • Develop content vocabulary • Modify teacher talk – speak slowly and use gestures

  9. Strategies for Simplifying and Adapting Materials • Decide what students need to learn from the text • Reduce non-essential details • Focus on concrete references first then develop abstract concepts • Relate to student’s experiences • Represent the information visually • Varied instruction
