CAP Glider Program - History • Test Program in Georgia • 1996 SSA & CAP signed MOU • Orientation Flight Syllabus expanded to include gliders • Glider Pilots recruited from clubs • Air Force built up CAP glider fleet • Cadet Glider Program established in most CAP wings
What does it take to be a CAP O ride Pilot? • CAP Membership - 3 weeks – ID Card • Level 1 Training – On-line courses • CAP History & Organization • Cadet Protection Policy & Practices • Operations Security • Equal Opportunity Policy • Ground Handling Video • Unit Commander Interview • Check Flight
On-going Qualifications • Monthly – Safety Briefing - Read Sentinel • Quarterly – Safety Meeting • Annually – “Safety Down Day Meeting” • Not Required! • Wearing of uniforms for glider operations • Squadron meeting attendance
Operations Regulations - a sample: • Only CAP members may fly in CAP aircraft • FAA flight examiner may give a flight test • Most other exceptions require approval of National and a waiver • No payment for CAP flying • Minimum standards are FAR’s … or CAP Operations Regulations when higher
Check Flight • Known as Form 5 • Form 5 required • ONCE in each aircraft type (Initial) • Annually in each aircraft group (Gliders) • Pre-requisites for Form 5 check flight • On-line exam on Operations Regs (20 questions) • Aircraft questionnaire for EACH aircraft in which you are qualified • Passenger currency in category • Form 5 partially filled-in before flight
Aircraft Questionnaire • Speeds (best glide, min sink, stall, etc.) • Rope break actions • Take-off and landing check lists • Spin recovery • Weight and balance
Check Flight / BFR • Tow • Slack line procedures • Boxing the wake • In-flight • Steep turns • Stall • Maneuvering at critically slow airspeed • Demonstration of Syllabus Maneuvers • Slips to landing
Cadet Orientation Flights • CAP Pamphlet 52-7 outlines program • Syllabus is a general guide only • Soaring conditions dictate actual flight • Pilot requirements (ONE needed) • 100 flights as PIC in gliders • Current CFI-G
Cadet Orientation Flights • 5 Glider orientation flights allowed per cadet • Unique syllabus specified for each flight • 80% of syllabus objectives must be completed for flight to count
Cadet Orientation Flights • No extreme maneuvers • Stalls on flight 3 – straight ahead & turning • Cadets are encouraged to handle controls except during takeoff & landing • Glider flight 4 is mainly about use of instruments • Glider flight 5 demonstrates soaring types
Glider Program Support Team • Glider & tow plane pilots • Flight Release Officers • Aircraft Managers • Event Coordinators • Ground Support Team • Visiting Senior Members & Cadets are given assignments
