Purpose of Massage Types of Massage • There are as many as 250 types of Massage & Bodywork. • Top 2 modalities are Deep-Tissue and Swedish Massage To enhance the general health and well-being of the recipient.
Benefits • Many look at massage as a luxury, but it is becoming more of a necessity to maintain well-being. • There is little knowledge in relation to that of mainstream medicine, but people seem to perceive the risk associated with trying massage as very low and the prospective rewards immediate and tangible.
A study by Touch Research Institute in 1996, showed that preterm babies who received massage therapy had 47% greater weight gain & 6 day shorter hospital stay then infants not receiving massage • Reduced chronic back pain in relation to other complementary techniques. (2000 report in the Canadian Med Assoc Journal) • Safe and Effective way to reduce pain and improve function in the adults with osteoarthritis of the knees (2006 study in the Archives of Internal Medicine) • Reduces symptoms from Carpel Tunnel Syndrome (Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies 2004)
Has been shown to strengthen the immune system (Journal of Neuroscience 1996) • Reduces the frequency of headaches (American Journal of Public Health 2000) Less stress and improved performance for small sample of employees (against a control group) who had twice weekly, 15 minute massages in the office Alzheimer’s patients showed reduced pacing, irritability and restlessness after neck and shoulder massage (Journal of Gerontological Nursing 1996) Fibromyalgia patients receiving 30 minute massages had less pain, depression, anxiety, stiffness, fatigue and sleep problems. (Journal of Clinical Rheumatology Report)
