A Nutrition and Health Study at Worthing High School, Houston, TX Gabrielle Bernard, Robert Owens, Ashley Irby, and Kanneiceya Godine (Worthing) Jay Raol, Nithin Rajan, Fernando Acosta, Sean Hardesy, Chantal Edwards, Jesse Turner and Andy Bost • Background: • -Due to rising rates of teen obesity in the U.S., it is important to understand the cause • -Students from Rice University and Worthing High School (WHS) undertook this research project to identify health and nutrition issues at WHS in Southeast Houston, TX • -A survey was taken and determined: • - height, weight, gender, level of physical activity and food choices at lunch • -attitudes toward health, nutrition, and food at lunch • -Linear Programming (LP) was used to study the food choices provided by Aramark for lunch • II. Goals: • -Show the eating habits of WHS students • -Improve the food provided at WHS • -Educate students about health and nutrition • III. Method: • -Linear Programming • -linprog routine in Matlab • -The Survey • -HOW MANY PEOPLE SURVEYED? • -Distributed during advocacy to various homeroom classes s IV. Results: Everyone • V. Discussion • -In the survey, the level of honesty in the answers was unknown • -Lack of people being surveyed may have skewed the results • -Nutritional information for foods at lunch is dependent upon information provided by Aramark • VI. Future Work: • More people need to be surveyed • The students height and weight should be taken by the researchers • Use an independent source to determine the nutritional value of the foods at WHS VII.
