  1. English 360 MWF 10:30-11:55 AM Vacaville Center Melissa Gunby

  2. Welcome! • English 360 is a 5-unit “accelerated” class in developmental English that a student may choose to take in place of English 305, 355, 370 or 380. This means you have the opportunity to move from developmental English courses up to English 1 in one semester, regardless of your placement score • This class will require you to be focused and conscientious. Though you will have more contact with the instructor, you will also have to do a significant amount of out of class work. • You should be prepared to devote TEN hours outside of class for homework per week.

  3. Questions? • Before I begin going through the course requirements and the syllabus, what questions do you have for me?

  4. Books

  5. Course Requirements How You’re Going to Pass This Class

  6. 2 Things • CME • Class

  7. CME • The CME is the Composition Mastery Exam, and is given at the end of every semester. To qualify for English 1, you must earn a combined score of an 8. • We will be doing some activities with practice exams throughout the semester. • The date for the CME has not been announced, but it will be on a Friday afternoon, from 2-4.

  8. The Class • This is a pass/no pass class. • However, you must earn the equivalent of a C (70%) to earn a passing grade. • Grades will be calculated thusly: • In-class activities (participation): 35% • Homework: 10% • Weekly vocabulary journals: 10% • Tests and quizzes: 15% • Essays and writing assignments: 30% • If you do not earn 70% you will not earn a passing grade, even if you complete the lab and pass the CME.

  9. What We’ll Be Doing in Class • Essays: We will be writing several essays. I haven’t decided how many or on what topics yet, though they will be connected to the two books we’ll be reading • Final Portfolio Project

  10. Quizzes and Exams • There will probably be quizzes on the readings as necessary • There will be two mid-term exams (see syllabus; these will be practice CMEs) • There will be one final exam (CME)

  11. Questions?

  12. Activity! • Each of you has a secret identity taped to your back. • Asking only Yes or No questions of your classmates, try to figure out who you are. • Once you’ve figured out your identity, seek out your partner. • When you’ve found your partner, sit together and introduce your real self to each other. • Be prepared to introduce your partner to the class.

  13. Introductions

  14. Resource Groups • Please assemble in the following groups. These will be your resource groups for the semester, and I suggest you exchange contact information so that you have someone to get notes and assignments from if you miss class or need something. • Kermit & Miss Piggy/Bert & Ernie • Superman/The Princess Bride • Obamas/Pitt/Jolie • Batman/Lord of the Rings • Star Wars/Twilight (5)

  15. Homework • Homework (see syllabus for more detail): • Get the books ordered • Get a dictionary if you don’t have one • Complete the “Turnitin Assignment” that was handed out to you Melissa Gunby 530-508-6501 msgunby@gmail.com
