  1. WelcomeWorkshop : Do you use ICT as a teaching tool? Starter: Write on a Post-it note “in text talk” the answers to the following questions: 1. Do you use ICT as a teaching tool at the moment, if so how? What do you hope to get from this session? Put your Post-it notes on the mobile phone……….

  2. Who am I? • My name is Pat Osborne • I am currently Head of ICT at Launceston College and I am “Aspiring to be an AST in ICT Teaching & Learning” (not a technician) • Background……… • Introduce yourself……..eg name, school, subject… • Do you use ICT as a teaching tool at the moment, if so how? • What do you hope to gain from this session? Who are you?

  3. Learning Objectives • To recognise different teaching strategies available when using technology to encourage outstanding teaching & learning • To be aware of other technology tools that can be used throughout your lessons • To gain at least one “I like that, I might try that” moment

  4. Discussion about…… The VLE as a teaching tool Setting own Learning Objectives Marking grids displayed Clear rules: set an ICT contract Give them a goal - finish for HW Peer Assessment Work on the board when they come in Move around the classroom Get students to teach parts/demo Independent Learning Starter timed so all log on Helping each other Screens off, face the front - 321 VLE upload, quick turnaround Praise! Strategies in the classroom Tools

  5. Setting your own Learning Objectives • I still set class objectives but…. • If the class are starting to work on different units at different levels - it is a good way for them and you to keep track of what they are doing • A teacher can view ALL the objectives • Use it as a plenary – who met THEIR objectives – then who met MY objectives • Get them to Peer Assess Evidence of this

  6. Work on the board when they come in • Log on and do this…….. • Make sure it is a task that allows for all students to trickle in from all the different lessons, log on & get a bit of the starter done

  7. Starter allowing enough time for all students to log on • There’s nothing worse….. • All the students come in at different times, they can all stand out side or…… • Get started – use this time to get them logged on – time your starter well so it covers a good time scale

  8. Screens off, face the front - 321 • This is a good strategy and habit to get into • I have tried putting the ownership on them – IF they think they can look at me with their screen still on – I will not tell them off – BUT few succeed!!! • It helps with concentration – avoids them being too distracted. • Walk around the class as you are talking so you don’t miss anyone!

  9. The VLE as a teaching tool • Ofsted “ICT in Schools 2008-2011” Report states: • Most of the schools either had a virtual learning environment in full use or were in the process of installing one. Where schools were making regular use of a virtual learning environment, they had been able to enhance and enrich many aspects of school life, including the quality of learning resources, communications with parents, and assessment and tracking processes. • Do you have/use one? • We use our VLE for resources, uploading students work, giving feedback and grades as a way of assessment. • It stores work (if backed up) • It allows work to be completed in and out of the classroom • Swift marking and feedback • LINK TO LAUNCESTON COLLEGE VLE

  10. Peer Assessment • Get them to peer assess work before they hand it in – saves loads of time as they pick up several errors for you! • Helps them learn from each other • Gives them new ideas • Encourages them to do well when looking at other peoples work

  11. Independent Learning • Push Independent learning – try and get the students to take ownership for their work and progression in the subject! • If they feel they are in control (ish;-) I find they tend to get more engaged in the lesson • Don’t give them answers, give them clues to the answer • Encourage them to look at the assignment or ask a peer • Play music to encourage a calm working environment. • Or…I let them listen to iPods when they are working, however I set the ground rules for them first

  12. Helping each other • They get a buzz from helping each other • If they can see on the board which tasks everyone has completed, they can look to see who has completed the task they are stuck on to get help rather than asking me • If a student doesn’t understand something, get their peer that does understand it explain it to them – it may help them understand it!

  13. Marking grids displayed It’s Pretty;-) Student names would go here Competition They know what they have left to do Get help from others who have done a task Target grades See what others have done

  14. VLE upload, quick turnaround • We don’t use this for every class but most of the GCSE work for ICT • It’s quick • It means you have a saved copy so if they delete it from their folder you still have a copy • It is accessible from school and home for marking • No folders to carry! • Quick and easy grading and feedback system • Class grades all in one place if groups are set

  15. Give them a goal then finish for HW • Our GCSE classes we aim for: • 2 lessons per task (approx) – then they finish it for homework • Extension work in class is the Merit & Distinction work to stretch the more able • Giving them a goal gives them something to work towards • Keeps them motivated

  16. Clear rules: set an ICT contract • Either at the beginning of each lesson if ICT is used little • Or at the beginning of the year we set our clear expectations • Why not get the students to create a contract they agree to follow!

  17. Move around the classroom

  18. Not like that…….! • Try and stand and teach from the hot spots • Get a student to control the smart board so you can have freedom to move around • During coursework lessons keep moving around the classroom encouraging students to: • Work Independently eg not relying on YOU • Helping each other • Peer assessing work • Praise good work • Give feedback to encourage improvement

  19. Get students to teach parts/demo • As a faculty we have got students to demonstrate work to get them involved • We have also given them chunks of the lesson to teach to give them ownership • It works really well!

  20. Praise! • Really important! • They like having their work displayed or shown to the class • They like seeing how well they are doing against the rest of the class • Most like praise when they do things well (zaps means prizes) • It makes them feel good when they finish the work to a Pass and are given the opportunity to work to a higher grade • Some comments from a recent ICT survey: • “The teacher is always happy and never in a mood” • “She is always smiling” • This gives a positive and friendly environment that students feel comfortable in.

  21. Other ideas…..

  22. Keyboard shortcut list Look more up online but here are a few….. Ctrl C is Copy Ctrl V is Paste Ctrl X is Cut Ctrl Z is Undo Ctrl Y is Redo Ctrl B is Bold Ctrl I is Italics Ctrl U is Underline Ctrl P is Print Ctrl S is Save Ctrl [ is make text smaller Ctrl ] is make text bigger Windows key & the Tab key together allows you to scroll through your open documents in a cool way! Do you use them?

  23. Smartboard • Configuration • Notebook & saving • General other tools available • Students to use it rather than you – they love it

  24. iPad • RemoteVU • App’s for Education

  25. XPS Document Writer • Use this printer instead of “LCC …. • It allows you to save your work as a printed “paperless” document • Or you could use the “PDF” printer • Our moderators are excepting these as printed documents • Get all students to print preview work before they print it to save time and paper!

  26. AB Tutor demo • Do you miss the old “RM Tutor” & “Browse Control” • Our IER have a new all in one program called “AB Tutor” • Would it benefit your department? • £199 x 1 £175 x 2 £125 x 10

  27. Document Finder • A great way to demonstrate students work to the rest of the class • Our technicians created aprogram that allows you toview students files • Type in the student name • Select it • Click “Open Documents” • Use their work as an assessment tool on the IWB

  28. Be part of monitoring Vandalism in ICT rooms • Check your room when you enter • Leave the room tidy when you leave • Check your room for vandalism at end of session • Report any vandalism or non working computers to your technicians • Turn computers off if you are the last lesson of the day.

  29. Cross Curriculum • Ofsted ICT in Schools 2008 – 2011 report states: Pupils’ use of ICT in other subjects was only occasionally tracked or recorded. For those students in Key Stage 4 who were not receiving specialist ICT teaching there was no systematic record of their learning in ICT and no means for teachers or pupils to know whether they had gaps in their knowledge. • It has been suggested that: • When using ICT in your subject you should use levels/grades for ICT as well as your subject • Include in your lesson objectives/assessment for ICT skills if using an ICT suite

  30. Any Questions?

  31. Did you all meet your Learning Objectives • To recognise different teaching strategies available when using technology to encourage outstanding teaching & learning • To be aware of other technology tools that can be used throughout your lessons • To gain at least one “I like that, I might try that” moment
