  1. 1 Seasonal- & annual-mean PP comparisonsWendy Ermold & Michael Steele 2 3

  2. Paty And Victoria’s Surface PP values on land? Regions? mgC/m3/d

  3. Surface PPDifference Plots mgC/m3/d If we did this: Fractional difference =difference/mean we’d get values up to 200%! Difference scale  Parameter scale!

  4. PP Histograms comparing Paty and Victoria

  5. Paty and Victoria’s Surface Chl difference scale is smaller, but still big! satellite is lower satellite is higher SurfaceChlorophyll (mg/m3) Chlorophyll Difference (mg/m3) Note non-linear scale

  6. The 4 Seasons of Paty’s IPP Integrated Primary Productivity (mgC/m2/day) IPP from in situ C14 IPP from in situ Chlorophyll Spring Spring nada almost nada Summer Summer some… nada

  7. Paty and Victoria’s IPP Integrated Primary Productivity (mgC/m2/day)

  8. IPPDifference Plots Integrated Primary Productivity (mgC/m2/day) Difference scale  Parameter scale!

  9. IPP Histograms comparing Paty and Victoria Total # of values available for comparison

  10. Depth of Integration lobes…?? Spring: EuD < MLD …everywhere Summer: EuD > MLD …everywhere but maybe not Siberian shelves? (and under the sea ice) meters Figure by Elise Olson and Paty Matrai Dec. 2007

  11. IPPDifference Plots Satellite < in situ EuD < MLD Satellite > in situ EuD > MLD Try comparing with same vertical depth integration… Integrated Primary Productivity (mgC/m2/day)

  12. Lou and Paty’s Annual IPP gC/m^2/yr 0-26m Integrated Summer Nitrate - Integrated Winter Nitrate 0-26m Integrated Summer Nitrate - Integrated Extended Winter Nitrate 0-26m Integrated Summer Phosphate - Integrated Winter Nitrate Paty’s Annual IPP Difference plots: not yet…

  13. Victoria’s Annual IPP mgC/m^2/day* 0.08 degree resolution On the EASE Grid • Paty’s Annual scale ranges from about 0 to 100 gC/m^2/yr OR 0 to 100,000 mgC/m^2/yr • The above data appears to be an annual per day average in mgC/m^2.

  14. Paty’s Annual IPP per day mgC/m^2/day (I divided by 365 to convert to daily)

  15. Annual IPP Fields I converted Lou and Paty’s fields to these units for this plot. mgC/m2/day Paty’s Fields Victoria’s Fields Lou’s Fields

  16. mgC/m2/DAY Seasonal IPP from in situ C14 Unit headaches… mgC/m2/MONTH? mgC/m2/YEAR Annual IPP derived from Seasonal IPP C14

  17. To do • Seasonal/Annual Mean sub-Project • Coordination of vertical integration • Intercalibration of methods • What are our scientific results? • Temporal change sub-Project • Linear trend lines: Can do it with satellite data, but are in situ data good enough? • Maybe just compare 2 time periods (pre/post 2000s?) • Crazy idea: Make synthetic PP maps of the pre-satellite era using • principle components derived from the satellite data, plus • older in situ data? • Summer 2007 sub-Project • Main idea: newly open water areas still have low PP ‘cause of low nuts?
